Chapter 5: Soils of West Bengal

PART I — ENGLISH

1. Introduction

West Bengal possesses remarkable soil diversity because the state extends from the young Himalayan mountains in the north to the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta and the Bay of Bengal coast in the south. Between these two extremes lie the alluvial plains, older uplands, lateritic tracts, river valleys and coastal tidal environments.

Soil distribution in West Bengal is therefore closely connected with relief, parent material, rivers, climate, vegetation, drainage, erosion and deposition.

For competitive examinations, it is important not merely to memorize the names of soils. Students should understand why a particular soil occurs in a particular region and how that soil influences agriculture, vegetation and land use.

Broadly, the important soil groups of West Bengal include:

  1. Alluvial soils

  2. Red and lateritic soils

  3. Terai and foothill soils

  4. Mountain and forest soils

  5. Coastal saline and deltaic soils

  6. Older alluvial and Barind soils

These categories overlap in places because soils change gradually rather than following administrative boundaries.

2. Major Factors Controlling Soil Formation

2.1 Parent Material

Parent material is the mineral material from which soil develops.

In the Gangetic plains, much of the soil has developed from sediments deposited by rivers. In western West Bengal, weathering of older rocks has contributed to the formation of red and lateritic soils.

Thus, the geological character of an area strongly influences soil colour, texture and mineral composition.

2.2 Climate

Temperature and rainfall influence the rate of weathering, leaching and organic decomposition.

High rainfall can wash soluble minerals downward through the soil profile. This process is known as leaching.

In high-rainfall areas, strong leaching can contribute to acidic soil conditions.

2.3 Relief

Relief controls drainage, erosion and soil depth.

Steep Himalayan slopes tend to have thinner and more erosion-prone soils, whereas plains and valley bottoms may accumulate deeper deposits.

In low-lying deltaic areas, poor drainage may lead to prolonged waterlogging.

2.4 Rivers

Rivers are among the most important soil-forming agents in West Bengal.

The Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly system and numerous other rivers have transported enormous quantities of sediment and deposited them across the plains and delta.

Floods may bring fresh sediment to floodplains, although floods can simultaneously cause erosion and crop damage.

2.5 Vegetation

Vegetation contributes organic matter to soil through decomposing leaves, roots and other biological material.

Vegetation also helps protect soil from direct rain impact and erosion.

2.6 Human Activities

Agriculture, irrigation, deforestation, mining, urbanization and improper land management can alter soil properties.

Continuous cultivation without adequate nutrient replacement may reduce soil fertility.

3. Alluvial Soils of West Bengal

Alluvial soil is the most extensive and agriculturally important soil category in much of the plains of West Bengal.

It develops primarily from sediments transported and deposited by rivers.

Important alluvial regions include large parts of:

  • Malda

  • Murshidabad

  • Nadia

  • Purba Bardhaman

  • Hooghly

  • Howrah

  • North 24 Parganas

  • parts of South 24 Parganas

  • other riverine plains of the state

Alluvial soils also occur in river valleys and floodplains in North Bengal.

3.1 Formation

Rivers carry materials such as:

  • sand

  • silt

  • clay

  • fine mineral particles

  • organic material

When river velocity decreases, these materials are deposited.

Repeated deposition over long periods creates extensive alluvial plains.

3.2 Characteristics

Alluvial soils vary greatly in texture and fertility.

They may range from relatively sandy deposits near active channels to silty and clayey soils in lower-energy floodplain environments.

Therefore, it is incorrect to assume that all alluvial soil has exactly the same composition or fertility.

3.3 Agricultural Importance

Alluvial plains support intensive agriculture.

Important crops associated with alluvial regions include:

  • rice

  • jute

  • potato

  • wheat

  • pulses

  • oilseeds

  • vegetables

  • sugarcane in suitable localities

Crop suitability depends not only on soil but also on irrigation, drainage, rainfall, temperature and agricultural management.

4. Newer and Older Alluvium

Competitive examinations sometimes distinguish between relatively recent alluvial deposits and older alluvial surfaces.

The distinction should be understood carefully because local soil classification is more complex than a simple two-category division.

Newer Alluvium

Areas close to active floodplains may receive comparatively recent sediment during floods or channel migration.

Such deposits are often relatively young.

Older Alluvium

Older terraces and surfaces that are no longer regularly renewed by active river deposition may develop more mature soil characteristics.

Thus, age of deposition and geomorphic position are important.

5. Barind Soils

The Barind tract is an important older alluvial landscape of northern West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh.

In West Bengal, Barind characteristics are particularly associated with parts of Malda and adjoining northern plains.

The surface is generally older and somewhat elevated compared with active floodplains.

Barind soils may be:

  • relatively compact

  • less permeable in some areas

  • reddish or yellowish-brown in appearance

  • comparatively older than fresh floodplain deposits

Agricultural productivity depends strongly on irrigation, drainage and soil management.

Exam Point

Barind should not be confused with the young, frequently renewed alluvial floodplain.

6. Red Soils of Western West Bengal

Red soils are characteristic of substantial parts of western West Bengal.

They are associated particularly with districts and regions such as:

  • Purulia

  • Bankura

  • Jhargram

  • western Paschim Medinipur

  • parts of Birbhum

  • parts of Paschim Bardhaman

Their occurrence reflects the older geological foundation of the western plateau fringe.

6.1 Why Are These Soils Red?

The red colour is mainly associated with iron oxides.

However, red colour does not mean that the soil is automatically highly fertile.

This is a very important examination trap.

6.2 Characteristics

Red soils may have:

  • relatively low organic matter

  • variable texture

  • acidic reaction in many locations

  • comparatively low natural fertility

  • lower moisture-retention capacity in coarser varieties

Agricultural productivity can be improved through proper management.

7. Lateritic Soils

Lateritic soils are also important in the western uplands of West Bengal.

They develop under conditions where prolonged weathering and leaching remove many soluble materials while relatively resistant compounds, especially iron and aluminium oxides, become concentrated.

Lateritic conditions occur in parts of:

  • Bankura

  • Purulia

  • Jhargram

  • Paschim Medinipur

  • Birbhum

  • western Bardhaman region

The exact distribution varies locally.

7.1 Characteristics of Lateritic Soils

Typical characteristics may include:

  • reddish to brown colour

  • strong weathering

  • significant leaching

  • iron-rich material

  • acidic tendencies

  • relatively low natural fertility in many areas

  • low organic matter in degraded sites

These soils require careful agricultural management.

7.2 Agriculture in Lateritic Regions

Agriculture can be improved through:

  • irrigation

  • organic manure

  • balanced fertilizers

  • liming where soil acidity requires correction

  • mulching

  • soil-moisture conservation

  • watershed development

Rice may be cultivated in suitable lowlands, while uplands support a range of crops depending on water availability and management.

8. Terai Soils

The Terai occurs along the Himalayan foothills.

Important areas include parts of:

  • Darjeeling foothills

  • Jalpaiguri

  • Alipurduar

  • adjoining North Bengal plains

These regions receive abundant rainfall and considerable river-borne sediment.

Terai soils are influenced by:

  • high rainfall

  • foothill drainage

  • rivers descending from the Himalayas

  • relatively high groundwater conditions in some areas

  • dense vegetation

The soils may be acidic in many places because heavy rainfall promotes leaching.

9. Dooars Soils

The Dooars region is closely associated with the Himalayan foothills and river systems of North Bengal.

The soil environment is strongly influenced by:

  • high rainfall

  • alluvial deposition

  • gravel and coarse material near some foothill streams

  • forest vegetation

  • rapid drainage in some locations

  • waterlogging in others

The region is famous for tea cultivation, but tea suitability cannot be explained by soil alone.

Tea cultivation depends on the interaction of:

  • soil

  • rainfall

  • temperature

  • humidity

  • drainage

  • relief

  • plantation management

10. Mountain and Forest Soils

Mountain soils occur mainly in the Himalayan districts and highlands of:

  • Darjeeling

  • Kalimpong

They vary considerably with:

  • altitude

  • slope

  • parent rock

  • vegetation

  • rainfall

  • drainage

On steep slopes, soils may be shallow because erosion removes material.

In forested areas, organic matter from vegetation may accumulate in the upper soil layers.

High rainfall can also encourage leaching and acidity.

11. Soil Erosion in the Himalayan Region

The Darjeeling-Kalimpong hills are highly susceptible to erosion and landslides.

Important contributing factors include:

  • steep slopes

  • intense monsoon rainfall

  • fragile slope materials

  • road cutting

  • construction

  • vegetation removal

  • poorly managed drainage

Soil conservation in these regions is therefore closely linked with slope stabilization and watershed management.

12. Coastal and Deltaic Soils

Southern West Bengal contains extensive deltaic and coastal environments.

Important areas include:

  • South 24 Parganas

  • Sundarbans

  • coastal Purba Medinipur

  • parts of North 24 Parganas

These soils have developed under the influence of:

  • river deposition

  • tidal action

  • estuarine processes

  • saline water

  • waterlogging

  • marine influence

13. Saline Soils of the Sundarbans

The Sundarbans present a special soil environment.

Although the region lies within a vast alluvial delta, the soils cannot simply be described as uniformly fertile alluvial soils.

Tidal influence and saline water can create substantial soil salinity.

Salinity may be intensified by:

  • saline tidal water

  • inadequate freshwater availability

  • poor drainage

  • evaporation

  • cyclone-induced storm surge

  • embankment breaches

High soil salinity can severely restrict crop choice and reduce agricultural productivity.

14. Cyclones and Soil Salinity

Cyclones can indirectly cause long-lasting soil problems.

During a cyclone, storm surge may push saline water inland.

If embankments are breached, agricultural fields may remain flooded with saline water.

After the water recedes, salts can remain in the soil.

This may:

  • reduce crop germination

  • affect plant water uptake

  • lower yields

  • alter soil chemistry

  • require freshwater flushing and drainage for recovery

Thus, a cyclone is not only a short-term weather disaster; in coastal agricultural areas it can also create longer-term soil degradation.

15. Soil and Agriculture in West Bengal

West Bengal's agricultural diversity reflects the interaction between soil, climate and water.

Rice

Rice is widely cultivated in alluvial and other suitable soils where adequate water is available.

Jute

Jute is strongly associated with the humid alluvial plains of the state.

Potato

Potato cultivation is important in suitable well-managed alluvial areas, especially in parts of the Gangetic plain.

Tea

Tea is important in Darjeeling, Terai and Dooars environments.

Pulses and Oilseeds

These are cultivated across several soil regions depending on season, moisture and local conditions.

16. Soil Fertility vs Soil Productivity

This distinction is very important.

Soil fertility

Fertility refers mainly to the soil's capacity to supply essential plant nutrients.

Soil productivity

Productivity refers to the soil's ability to produce crops under a particular system of management.

A soil with moderate natural fertility may become highly productive through:

  • irrigation

  • fertilizers

  • manure

  • drainage

  • improved seeds

  • pest management

  • scientific farming

Therefore:

Fertility and productivity are related, but they are not identical.

17. Major Soil Degradation Problems

West Bengal faces different soil problems in different physiographic regions.

Western districts

Major problems include:

  • sheet erosion

  • rill erosion

  • gully erosion

  • moisture loss

  • declining organic matter

  • land degradation

Himalayan region

Problems include:

  • slope erosion

  • landslides

  • loss of topsoil

Riverine plains

Problems include:

  • riverbank erosion

  • sand deposition after floods

  • waterlogging in low-lying areas

Coastal region

Problems include:

  • salinity

  • waterlogging

  • tidal erosion

  • cyclone-related saline inundation

18. Sheet, Rill and Gully Erosion

Sheet erosion

A thin layer of topsoil is removed over a broad surface by runoff.

Rill erosion

Small channels are formed by concentrated surface runoff.

Gully erosion

When erosion enlarges channels into deeper cuts, gullies develop.

Western uplands with degraded vegetation and intense rainfall can be vulnerable to these processes.

19. Riverbank Erosion

Riverbank erosion is an important problem in several parts of West Bengal.

River channels naturally migrate, especially across unconsolidated alluvial plains.

Bank erosion can cause:

  • loss of agricultural land

  • damage to houses

  • displacement

  • destruction of roads and embankments

The Ganga-Padma system and several other rivers have historically produced severe bank erosion in vulnerable areas.

20. Soil Conservation

Different regions require different conservation techniques.

20.1 Contour Farming

Cultivation along contour lines reduces rapid downhill runoff on slopes.

20.2 Terracing

Terracing can help reduce runoff and soil loss on suitable hill slopes.

20.3 Afforestation

Vegetation protects soil through roots and canopy cover.

20.4 Check Dams

Small barriers can slow runoff and reduce gully erosion.

20.5 Watershed Management

Integrated management of land, vegetation and water can improve soil-moisture conservation.

20.6 Mulching

Mulch protects soil and reduces evaporation.

20.7 Crop Rotation

Crop rotation can help maintain soil health and nutrient balance.

20.8 Organic Matter

Compost and manure improve soil structure and biological activity.

20.9 Drainage

Drainage is particularly important in waterlogged and saline areas.

20.10 Rainwater Harvesting

This is especially useful in relatively water-stressed western districts.

21. Soil Testing

Soil testing allows farmers to determine characteristics such as:

  • pH

  • nutrient status

  • organic carbon

  • deficiencies

  • fertilizer requirements

Scientific fertilizer use can reduce unnecessary expenditure and prevent nutrient imbalance.

22. Soil pH

Soil pH indicates acidity or alkalinity.

  • pH below 7 → acidic

  • pH around 7 → neutral

  • pH above 7 → alkaline

High-rainfall regions may develop acidic tendencies because of leaching.

Coastal saline soils present a different set of chemical problems associated with salt accumulation.

24. Important Exam Traps

Trap 1

Red soil is red because it is extremely fertile.

Wrong.

Its colour is mainly related to iron oxides.

Trap 2

All alluvial soils are identical.

Wrong.

Alluvial soil varies according to sediment source, age, texture, drainage and depositional environment.

Trap 3

The Sundarbans have simple fertile alluvial soil everywhere.

Wrong.

Salinity, tidal action and waterlogging substantially modify the soil environment.

Trap 4

Lateritic soils are naturally among the most fertile soils of West Bengal.

Wrong.

Strong leaching can make many lateritic soils nutrient-poor without proper management.

Trap 5

Tea cultivation depends only on soil.

Wrong.

Rainfall, temperature, humidity, drainage, slope, elevation and management are also important.

Trap 6

Floods always improve soil fertility.

Wrong.

Floods may deposit useful sediment, but they can also erode fertile topsoil, deposit sand and damage agricultural land.

Trap 7

Soil fertility and productivity mean exactly the same thing.

Wrong.

Productivity also depends on water, management, technology and other factors.

Trap 8

Western West Bengal is dominated by fresh river alluvium everywhere.

Wrong.

Large areas of the western plateau fringe contain red and lateritic soils developed over older geological formations.

PART III —
