PART I — ENGLISH
1. Introduction
West Bengal has a remarkably varied climate despite being a single state. This variation results from its unusual geographical extent—from the Himalayan mountains in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south.
The state broadly experiences a monsoon-dominated climate, but climatic conditions are not uniform throughout West Bengal.
Darjeeling and other higher Himalayan areas remain considerably cooler than the plains because of altitude. The Terai and Dooars receive abundant rainfall. The western districts such as Purulia and Bankura experience hotter summers and comparatively drier conditions. The Gangetic plains are generally hot and humid during summer, while the coastal and Sundarbans regions are strongly influenced by the Bay of Bengal.
Therefore, describing the entire state with one simple climatic label can be misleading.
For competitive examinations, West Bengal's climate should be understood through the interaction of:
Latitude
Altitude
Himalayan relief
Bay of Bengal
Southwest monsoon
Distance from the sea
Local relief and topography
Cyclonic disturbances
Continentality
Seasonal wind circulation
2. Major Controls of West Bengal's Climate
2.1 The Himalayas
The Himalayas exert a major influence on the climate of northern West Bengal.
Elevation causes temperatures to decline significantly in the Darjeeling–Kalimpong highlands.
The Himalayan relief also forces moisture-bearing air to rise. As air rises, it cools and condensation occurs, producing orographic rainfall.
This is one reason why the Himalayan foothills, Terai and Dooars receive abundant rainfall.
The mountains also affect the movement of air masses over northern India.
Exam concept
Moist air + mountain barrier + forced ascent → cooling → condensation → orographic rainfall
3. Influence of the Bay of Bengal
The Bay of Bengal strongly influences southern and eastern West Bengal.
It is an important source of atmospheric moisture.
The Bay of Bengal branch of the southwest monsoon provides a large proportion of West Bengal's seasonal rainfall.
The Bay also influences:
Humidity
Monsoon rainfall
Cyclonic disturbances
Coastal temperatures
Storm surges
Local weather conditions
Coastal regions generally experience a more maritime climate than the western interior.
This means that coastal areas usually have a smaller annual temperature range than inland western districts, although they often experience much higher humidity.
4. Influence of Altitude
Altitude is particularly important in northern West Bengal.
Temperature generally decreases with increasing elevation.
Therefore, the climatic conditions of Darjeeling are very different from those of Siliguri, even though both are situated in North Bengal.
Darjeeling is situated at a considerably greater elevation and consequently experiences much cooler conditions.
This explains why altitude, rather than latitude alone, is the principal reason for the cool climate of the Darjeeling hills.
Exam trap
Wrong: Darjeeling is cooler primarily because it is farther north.
Correct: Its high elevation is the major reason for its much cooler climate.
5. Continentality in Western West Bengal
Western districts such as Purulia and Bankura are farther from the direct moderating influence of the Bay of Bengal than coastal districts.
These areas therefore display relatively stronger continental characteristics.
Summers can become extremely hot.
The difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures can also be more pronounced than in humid coastal areas.
Winter nights may become comparatively cool.
The western plateau fringe is also generally less humid than the coastal and deltaic regions.
6. Major Climatic Regions of West Bengal
West Bengal can be divided into several broad climatic regions for conceptual understanding.
| Region | General climatic characteristics |
|---|---|
| Darjeeling–Kalimpong hills | Cool mountain climate, high rainfall, lower temperatures |
| Terai–Dooars | Warm, very humid and very high monsoon rainfall |
| North Bengal plains | Humid monsoonal conditions and significant flood risk |
| Western plateau fringe | Hotter summers, relatively drier conditions and heatwave risk |
| Gangetic plains | Hot and humid summers with substantial monsoon rainfall |
| Kolkata–Hooghly belt | Humid climate, urban heat and monsoon waterlogging |
| Coastal Bengal | Maritime influence, high humidity and cyclone exposure |
| Sundarbans | Humid, tidal-coastal environment with cyclone and storm-surge risk |
These are broad regions, not rigid climatic boundaries.
7. Seasons of West Bengal
For practical climatological study, the year can broadly be divided into four major periods:
1. Winter or Cold Weather Season
December to February
2. Pre-Monsoon or Hot Weather Season
March to May
3. Southwest Monsoon Season
June to September
4. Post-Monsoon or Retreating Monsoon Season
October to November
The actual onset and withdrawal of weather conditions vary from year to year.
8. Winter Season — December to February
Winter in West Bengal is generally cool and relatively dry.
However, winter temperatures vary enormously between the Himalayan hills and southern plains.
8.1 Northern Hills
The Darjeeling and higher Himalayan regions experience cold winters.
Temperatures decline sharply with altitude.
At sufficiently high elevations, frost and occasional snowfall may occur under suitable conditions.
However, students should not assume that heavy snowfall is a routine feature throughout Darjeeling district.
8.2 Gangetic Plains
The Gangetic plains experience relatively mild winters.
Days are generally comfortable, while nights may become cool.
Fog can develop, particularly during calm and moist winter conditions.
8.3 Western Districts
Western districts can experience relatively cool nights because of stronger continental influence and lower humidity.
8.4 Winter Rainfall
Winter is generally a relatively dry season in West Bengal.
Occasional western disturbances may influence the Himalayan and northern regions and can sometimes produce precipitation.
However, winter rainfall contributes only a small proportion of the state's annual rainfall compared with the southwest monsoon.
9. Pre-Monsoon or Hot Weather Season — March to May
Temperatures begin to rise rapidly from March.
April and May are generally among the hottest months in many parts of the state.
The western districts become especially hot because of their inland location and plateau-fringe characteristics.
Purulia, Bankura and adjoining western regions can experience severe heat conditions.
Gangetic West Bengal also becomes hot, but increasing atmospheric moisture can make conditions particularly uncomfortable.
10. Heatwaves in West Bengal
Heatwaves are an important summer hazard.
Western and Gangetic districts can experience prolonged periods of very high temperature.
High temperatures combined with humidity can create severe human thermal discomfort in southern and eastern districts.
Heatwaves can affect:
Human health
Outdoor labour
Agriculture
Water demand
Electricity demand
Livestock
Transport infrastructure
Important concept
A coastal location does not necessarily feel comfortable simply because its maximum temperature may be lower than that of an inland location.
High humidity reduces the effectiveness of evaporative cooling from the human body.
Therefore, hot and humid weather can feel extremely oppressive.
11. Kalbaishakhi or Nor'westers
One of the most important weather phenomena of West Bengal is the Kalbaishakhi.
Kalbaishakhis are violent pre-monsoon thunderstorms that occur mainly during March to May.
They are also known as Nor'westers.
11.1 Characteristics
Kalbaishakhi storms may be accompanied by:
Strong squally winds
Thunder
Lightning
Heavy short-duration rainfall
Hail in some cases
Sudden fall in temperature
These thunderstorms frequently develop during the afternoon or evening after strong daytime heating.
11.2 Why Do They Develop?
During the pre-monsoon season, intense surface heating creates atmospheric instability.
Moisture from the Bay of Bengal may interact with hot continental air.
When favourable atmospheric conditions develop, powerful convective clouds can form.
These may produce severe thunderstorms.
11.3 Importance
Kalbaishakhi storms can provide valuable pre-monsoon rainfall.
They may benefit certain crops and temporarily reduce extreme heat.
However, they can also cause:
Crop damage
Falling trees
Damage to houses
Lightning casualties
Disruption of transport and electricity supply
Exam trap
Kalbaishakhi is a pre-monsoon phenomenon, not a winter rainfall system.
12. Southwest Monsoon Season — June to September
The southwest monsoon is the most important rainfall season of West Bengal.
A substantial share of the state's annual rainfall occurs during this period.
The Bay of Bengal branch of the southwest monsoon is especially important for West Bengal.
The monsoon normally advances into the region during June, but the precise date varies from year to year.
The onset can differ between North Bengal and southern West Bengal.
Students should therefore avoid memorising the monsoon as arriving on one permanently fixed date every year.
13. Bay of Bengal Branch of the Southwest Monsoon
Moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal move towards eastern and northeastern India.
When these winds reach West Bengal, they provide widespread rainfall.
The distribution of rainfall is influenced by:
Relief
Elevation
Wind direction
Monsoon depressions
Low-pressure systems
Distance from moisture sources
Local atmospheric conditions
The Himalayan foothills enhance rainfall through orographic lifting.
14. Orographic Rainfall in North Bengal
Orographic rainfall is extremely important for understanding North Bengal's climate.
Moist air approaching the Himalayan foothills is forced upward.
As the air rises:
Atmospheric pressure decreases.
The air expands.
The air cools.
Water vapour condenses.
Clouds form.
Rainfall occurs.
This mechanism contributes to heavy rainfall in the Himalayan foothills, Terai and Dooars.
Exam formula
Moist monsoon air + Himalayan relief = enhanced orographic rainfall
15. Climate of the Terai and Dooars
The Terai and Dooars are among the wettest broad regions of West Bengal.
These regions receive abundant monsoon rainfall because of their location near the Himalayan foothills.
The climate is generally:
Warm
Humid
Rainy
Strongly monsoonal
Heavy rainfall contributes to lush vegetation and supports tea cultivation in suitable areas.
However, intense rainfall can also cause:
Floods
Riverbank erosion
Waterlogging
Damage to roads and bridges
16. Climate of Darjeeling and Kalimpong Hills
The hill regions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong experience a cooler climate than the plains.
Altitude is the dominant reason.
Summers are considerably milder than in the Gangetic plains.
Winters can become cold, particularly at higher elevations.
The region receives substantial rainfall during the monsoon.
Steep slopes combined with intense rainfall can increase the risk of landslides.
Important climatic hazards
Landslides
Slope failure
Intense rainfall
Local flooding
Fog and poor visibility
17. Climate of Western West Bengal
The western plateau-fringe region includes areas of districts such as:
Purulia
Bankura
Jhargram
Western Paschim Medinipur
Parts of Paschim Bardhaman
Parts of Birbhum
This region is comparatively more continental.
Characteristics
Very hot summers
Lower humidity than coastal Bengal
Comparatively lower rainfall than the wettest parts of North Bengal
Greater seasonal temperature variation
Heatwave risk
Periodic moisture stress and drought-like conditions
The red and lateritic landscape of the western region is also related to its geology, relief, weathering and drainage conditions.
18. Climate of the Gangetic Plains
The Gangetic plains of West Bengal experience a humid monsoon climate.
Summer is generally hot.
Humidity increases as the monsoon approaches.
The southwest monsoon provides substantial rainfall.
The low relief and extensive river network make some areas vulnerable to:
Flooding
Waterlogging
Drainage congestion
Riverbank erosion
Winter is generally mild compared with northern India.
19. Climate of Kolkata
Kolkata has a hot and humid climate with strong monsoonal influence.
Summer
Summer is hot and humid.
High atmospheric moisture can make conditions feel particularly uncomfortable.
Pre-monsoon
Kalbaishakhi thunderstorms can affect Kolkata and surrounding areas.
Monsoon
The city receives substantial rainfall during the southwest monsoon.
Intense rainfall can create urban waterlogging where drainage capacity is exceeded.
Winter
Winter is generally mild and comparatively dry.
Urban Heat Island Effect
Built-up surfaces such as concrete and asphalt absorb and store heat.
Reduced vegetation and heat released by human activities can make densely built urban areas warmer than surrounding less-developed areas.
This phenomenon is known as the urban heat island effect.
20. Coastal Climate of West Bengal
Coastal areas are strongly influenced by the Bay of Bengal.
Their climate is generally:
Humid
Maritime
Moderated in annual temperature range
Influenced by sea breezes
Exposed to tropical cyclones
The sea reduces extreme temperature variation compared with the western interior.
However, high humidity can produce considerable thermal discomfort.
21. Climate of the Sundarbans
The Sundarbans have a humid tropical coastal environment.
The region is strongly influenced by:
Bay of Bengal
Tides
Estuarine channels
Monsoon rainfall
Tropical cyclones
Storm surges
The landscape is extremely low-lying.
This increases vulnerability to coastal flooding and saline-water intrusion.
Mangrove ecosystems are adapted to the tidal and saline environment.
22. Distribution of Rainfall in West Bengal
Rainfall is not uniformly distributed across West Bengal.
This is one of the most important examination concepts.
Very High Rainfall
The Himalayan foothills, Terai and Dooars receive very high rainfall.
Orographic uplift is an important cause.
North Bengal Hills
Rainfall varies according to elevation, slope orientation and local relief.
Gangetic Plains
The Gangetic plains receive substantial monsoon rainfall.
Western Plateau Fringe
Western districts generally receive comparatively less rainfall than the wettest northern areas.
Rainfall variability can create agricultural stress.
Coastal and Deltaic Bengal
The coastal region receives monsoon rainfall as well as heavy rainfall associated with cyclonic disturbances.
General examination pattern
North Bengal foothills/Dooars → very wet
Gangetic plains → substantial monsoon rainfall
Western plateau fringe → comparatively drier
This should be treated as a broad spatial pattern rather than an absolute rule for every individual location.
23. Monsoon Depressions and Low-Pressure Systems
The Bay of Bengal frequently develops low-pressure systems during the monsoon.
Some intensify into depressions.
These systems can move inland and produce widespread rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas.
They may also carry rainfall into western districts.
Consequently, monsoon rainfall in West Bengal does not depend only on ordinary moist monsoon winds.
Synoptic weather systems such as depressions and low-pressure areas are also important.
24. Active and Break Phases of the Monsoon
Monsoon rainfall does not occur with the same intensity every day.
There are periods of enhanced rainfall known as active monsoon phases.
There may also be periods when rainfall becomes considerably weaker over a particular region.
These are commonly described as breaks or weak monsoon conditions.
This variability is important for agriculture.
Too much rainfall can cause floods, while prolonged rainfall deficiency can create moisture stress.
25. Post-Monsoon Season — October to November
During October and November, the southwest monsoon gradually withdraws.
Humidity begins to decline, although October can remain hot and humid.
This season is extremely important for West Bengal because the Bay of Bengal can produce powerful cyclonic disturbances.
These systems can bring:
Heavy rainfall
Strong winds
Coastal flooding
Storm surges
Crop damage
Infrastructure damage
Important exam trap
The post-monsoon rainfall of West Bengal should not simply be described as the same northeast monsoon regime that dominates Tamil Nadu's seasonal rainfall.
For West Bengal, Bay of Bengal cyclones, depressions and other disturbances are particularly important during this period.
26. Tropical Cyclones and West Bengal
West Bengal's coast is vulnerable to tropical cyclones originating over the Bay of Bengal.
Cyclonic activity is particularly important during:
Pre-monsoon months, especially April–May
Post-monsoon months, especially October–November
Cyclones may also occur outside these periods.
26.1 Major Hazards
A cyclone can produce several different hazards simultaneously:
Destructive winds
Heavy rainfall
Storm surge
Coastal flooding
Embankment breaches
Salinity intrusion
Crop losses
Damage to houses and infrastructure
27. What Is a Storm Surge?
A storm surge is an abnormal rise of sea level generated mainly by strong cyclonic winds and low atmospheric pressure.
It is different from ordinary rainfall flooding.
When a storm surge coincides with high tide, coastal inundation can become more severe.
The low-lying islands and embanked areas of the Sundarbans are particularly vulnerable.
Exam trap
Cyclone ≠ storm surge
A cyclone is the atmospheric storm system.
A storm surge is one of the coastal hazards that a cyclone can generate.
28. Notable Cyclones Affecting West Bengal
Several powerful cyclones have demonstrated West Bengal's coastal vulnerability.
Cyclone Aila — 2009
Aila severely affected the Sundarbans and adjoining coastal regions.
Embankments were breached in many areas, allowing saline water to enter agricultural land and settlements.
Cyclone Amphan — 2020
Amphan caused extensive damage across southern West Bengal, including Kolkata and the Sundarbans.
Strong winds, rainfall and storm surge produced major impacts.
Cyclone Yaas — 2021
Yaas significantly affected coastal areas of eastern India and contributed to severe coastal inundation in parts of West Bengal.
These examples are useful for understanding the nature of cyclone hazards rather than simply memorising names.
29. Humidity in West Bengal
Humidity varies considerably across the state.
Coastal Bengal
Humidity is generally high because of proximity to the Bay of Bengal.
Gangetic Plains
Humidity becomes particularly high during the monsoon and pre-monsoon transition.
Western Districts
The western interior can experience lower relative humidity, particularly during hot pre-monsoon afternoons and the dry season.
North Bengal
High rainfall and abundant vegetation contribute to humid conditions across much of North Bengal.
30. Climate and Agriculture
Climate directly affects West Bengal's agriculture.
Rice
Rice cultivation depends heavily on adequate water supply.
The timing and distribution of monsoon rainfall are therefore extremely important.
Jute
Jute cultivation benefits from warm, humid conditions and adequate rainfall.
Tea
Tea cultivation is particularly important in Darjeeling and the Dooars.
Suitable temperature, rainfall, humidity, drainage, soil and relief together create favourable conditions.
Important exam point
Tea cultivation cannot be explained by rainfall alone.
It depends on a combination of:
Climate
Soil
Drainage
Relief
Elevation
Agricultural management
31. Climate-Related Natural Hazards
West Bengal experiences different climatic hazards in different geographical regions.
| Region | Major climatic hazards |
|---|---|
| Darjeeling–Kalimpong hills | Heavy rainfall and landslides |
| Terai–Dooars | Heavy rainfall and floods |
| North Bengal plains | River floods and erosion |
| Western districts | Heatwaves and rainfall deficiency |
| Gangetic plains | Floods, thunderstorms and heat stress |
| Kolkata | Heat, intense rainfall and waterlogging |
| Coastal Bengal | Cyclones and storm surges |
| Sundarbans | Cyclones, storm surge, salinity and coastal flooding |
32. Lightning and Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms are an important warm-season hazard in West Bengal.
Kalbaishakhi storms can generate frequent lightning.
Lightning may affect:
Farmers
Outdoor workers
Livestock
Buildings
Electrical infrastructure
Thunderstorms continue to occur during the monsoon as well.
Students should therefore distinguish between Kalbaishakhi as a characteristic pre-monsoon thunderstorm phenomenon and thunderstorms in general.
33. Landslides in North Bengal
The Himalayan districts are susceptible to landslides.
Important contributing factors include:
Steep slopes
Intense rainfall
Weak or weathered material
Slope modification
Drainage disruption
Road cutting and construction in vulnerable areas
Heavy monsoon rainfall can saturate slope materials and reduce their stability.
Therefore, intense rainfall and landslides are closely related in the Himalayan parts of West Bengal.
34. Drought and Moisture Stress
West Bengal is commonly associated with monsoon rainfall and floods, but some western areas can also experience rainfall deficiency.
Purulia, Bankura and adjoining western regions are comparatively more vulnerable to moisture stress than the humid northern foothills.
Irregular monsoon rainfall can adversely affect rain-fed agriculture.
Water conservation is therefore important in western West Bengal.
Measures include:
Rainwater harvesting
Watershed development
Small water-storage structures
Efficient irrigation
Soil-moisture conservation
35. Climate Change and West Bengal
Long-term climate change can influence West Bengal through several pathways.
35.1 Rising Heat Stress
A warming climate increases the background risk of extreme heat and human thermal stress.
Urbanisation can further intensify local heat exposure.
35.2 Coastal Vulnerability
Sea-level rise is particularly important for low-lying coastal and deltaic regions.
Higher background sea levels can increase the potential impact of coastal flooding and storm surges.
35.3 Extreme Rainfall
Changes in rainfall intensity and variability can complicate flood and urban-drainage management.
35.4 Himalayan Ecosystems
Changes in temperature and rainfall can affect fragile Himalayan ecosystems, water availability and slope stability.
35.5 Agriculture
Changes in temperature, rainfall distribution and extreme-weather events can affect crop productivity.
Scientific caution
It is incorrect to state that every individual cyclone, flood, drought or heatwave is directly "caused" by climate change.
Climate change alters the background conditions in which extreme events occur and can influence the probability or severity of particular types of extremes.
36. Climate Adaptation in West Bengal
Important adaptation measures include:
Improved cyclone early-warning systems
Cyclone shelters
Stronger and better-maintained embankments
Mangrove conservation
Improved urban drainage
Heat action planning
Rainwater harvesting
Watershed management
Climate-resilient agriculture
Better land-use planning
Protection of wetlands
Disaster preparedness
No single measure can eliminate climate-related risk.
An integrated approach is necessary.
37. Important Examination Traps

PART III —
