Exercise Malabar | मालाबार नौसैनिक अभ्यास
Why in News?
INS Sahyadri participated in Exercise Malabar, bringing attention to one of the Indo-Pacific region's most prominent multilateral naval exercises involving India, the United States, Japan and Australia.
What is Exercise Malabar?

Origin
Malabar began in 1992 as a bilateral naval exercise between the Indian Navy and the United States Navy.

Japan
Japan participated in different editions before becoming a permanent participant in 2015, turning Malabar into a regular trilateral exercise involving India, the United States and Japan.
Australia
Australia returned to Malabar in 2020, establishing the present four-country configuration of India, United States, Japan and Australia.
Quad Connection
The four participating countries are also members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, commonly called the Quad. However, Exercise Malabar is a naval exercise and should not be treated as institutionally identical to the Quad diplomatic grouping.
