Why is the One Tag System in News?

India has introduced an important reform in its electronic toll collection ecosystem through the One Tag system. The initiative was launched by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on 11 September 2026 at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. Its most important feature is FASTag bank portability. Vehicle owners will be able to change the bank or issuer connected with an existing FASTag without removing the physical FASTag sticker from the windscreen.

The change addresses a practical inconvenience faced by motorists. Although FASTag already works across participating toll plazas, changing the institution that issued the tag could require users to close or deactivate an existing FASTag and obtain another tag. The One Tag framework seeks to separate the physical identification tag from the choice of banking service provider.

How Does One Tag Work?

The concept can be understood by comparing it with mobile number portability. In mobile number portability, a subscriber can retain the same mobile number while changing the telecom operator. Similarly, under the One Tag framework, the same physical FASTag can remain on the vehicle while the backend issuing bank is changed digitally.

The facility is expected to be integrated with the National Highways Authority of India's Rajmargyatra digital ecosystem. This can make changing the associated institution easier while avoiding unnecessary replacement of the RFID sticker.

What is FASTag?

FASTag is an electronic toll collection mechanism based on Radio Frequency Identification technology. An RFID-enabled sticker is fixed to the windscreen of a vehicle. When the vehicle approaches an enabled toll lane, the reader installed at the toll plaza detects the tag and initiates the toll transaction electronically.

This system reduces dependence on cash transactions and contributes to shorter queues, improved transparency and faster movement of vehicles. Electronic toll collection has become the dominant method of collecting user fees on India's National Highways.

What is RFID?

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. It is a technology that uses radio waves to identify and exchange information with tagged objects. In FASTag, the basic process can be understood as RFID Tag → Toll Reader → Vehicle Identification → Transaction Processing → Toll Deduction.

A major advantage of RFID is that it does not require the same direct line-of-sight scanning generally associated with conventional barcodes. This makes it suitable for automated transport and tolling applications.

FASTag and NETC

FASTag should not be confused with the National Electronic Toll Collection ecosystem. FASTag is the RFID-based tag attached to the vehicle, while NETC provides the wider interoperable framework through which participating institutions and toll plazas communicate and settle transactions.

The National Payments Corporation of India plays an important role in the NETC ecosystem. Interoperability ensures that a FASTag issued by one participating institution can normally be used across participating toll plazas rather than only at facilities connected with that issuer.

Role of NHAI

The National Highways Authority of India is an important organisation responsible for development, maintenance and management of National Highways entrusted to it. NHAI functions under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Why is FASTag Portability Important?

The reform improves consumer choice because vehicle owners can potentially move to another participating institution without replacing the physical tag. Greater portability can also encourage banks and other issuers to compete on customer service, digital experience and transaction management.

It additionally reduces wastage associated with repeated issuance of physical tags. At a wider level, the reform follows India's approach of building interoperable digital infrastructure in areas such as payments and public services.

Move Towards Barrier-Free Tolling

India is also working towards free-flow and barrier-free toll collection. Such systems can combine RFID, automatic number plate recognition, cameras, digital payments and other technologies so that compliant vehicles do not need to stop at a conventional toll barrier.
