Guru Tegh Bahadur: Life, Teachings, Martyrdom and Legacy |

English

Introduction

Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru of Sikhism, occupies an important place in Indian history for his spiritual teachings, courage and supreme sacrifice. His life represents the ideals of fearlessness, compassion, dignity and the defence of freedom of conscience.

He was the son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru, and the father of Guru Gobind Singh, who became the tenth Sikh Guru.

Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed in Delhi in 1675 during the reign of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Sikh historical tradition associates his martyrdom with his decision to stand in defence of people facing religious persecution, particularly Kashmiri Pandits.

His sacrifice therefore holds significance beyond the history of Sikhism. It is remembered as an important example of standing for the right of people to follow their faith and conscience.

Why was Guru Tegh Bahadur in the News?

The year 2025 marked the 350th anniversary of the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

The Government of India organised commemorative programmes to mark the occasion. On 25 November 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a major programme at Kurukshetra, Haryana, commemorating the 350th Shaheedi Diwas.

A special commemorative coin and postage stamp were also released on the occasion.

The Government of India announced a year-long commemoration honouring the ninth Sikh Guru and his sacrifice.

The anniversary brought renewed attention to his life, teachings and contribution to India's spiritual and cultural history.

Early Life of Guru Tegh Bahadur

Guru Tegh Bahadur was born in 1621.

He was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru. His mother was Mata Nanaki.

His childhood name is traditionally given as Tyag Mal.

Growing up in the household of Guru Hargobind exposed him to both spiritual learning and the Sikh tradition of courage and responsibility.

Guru Hargobind had played an important role in developing the concept represented by Miri and Piri, expressing the relationship between temporal responsibility and spiritual authority in Sikh tradition.

According to Sikh tradition, Tyag Mal demonstrated exceptional courage in battle, following which his father gave him the name Tegh Bahadur.

The word “Tegh” is associated with the sword, while “Bahadur” signifies bravery or courage.

Becoming the Ninth Sikh Guru

The eighth Sikh Guru, Guru Har Krishan, died in Delhi in 1664.

Before his death, he is traditionally associated with the words “Baba Bakale”, indicating that the next Guru would be found at Bakala.

Guru Tegh Bahadur was subsequently recognised as the ninth Sikh Guru in 1664.

His succession is also associated in Sikh tradition with Bhai Makhan Shah Lubana, a merchant who is remembered for identifying Guru Tegh Bahadur at Bakala.

Guru Tegh Bahadur then assumed responsibility for guiding the Sikh community.

Travels and Mission

Guru Tegh Bahadur travelled extensively during his Guruship.

His journeys were important for spreading spiritual teachings and strengthening Sikh communities.

His travels took him through different parts of northern and eastern India.

Traditions associated with his journeys connect him with regions corresponding to present-day Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam.

These journeys demonstrate that his activities were not confined to one geographical region.

He interacted with communities, preached spiritual values and encouraged people to lead lives based on devotion, ethical conduct and courage.

Association with Anandpur Sahib

Guru Tegh Bahadur has an important association with the development of Anandpur Sahib in present-day Punjab.

The settlement was originally associated with the name Chakk Nanaki, named after his mother, Mata Nanaki.

It later developed into Anandpur Sahib and became one of the most important centres of Sikh history.

Its historical importance increased further during the period of Guru Gobind Singh.

In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib.

Students should therefore distinguish between the two historical connections:

Guru Tegh Bahadur → establishment/development of the settlement associated with Anandpur Sahib

Guru Gobind Singh → creation of the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib in 1699

Teachings of Guru Tegh Bahadur

Guru Tegh Bahadur was not only a historical leader but also an important spiritual teacher.

His teachings emphasised control over ego and attachment, remembrance of God, courage in adversity and an ethical life.

Several important themes emerge from his spiritual thought.

Detachment

Material possessions and worldly success should not dominate human consciousness. Spiritual freedom requires overcoming excessive attachment.

Fearlessness

A person following truth should neither live in constant fear nor deliberately frighten others.

Equality and Human Dignity

Human worth should not depend upon wealth, social position or worldly power.

Spiritual Discipline

Inner peace requires self-control, remembrance of the divine and freedom from destructive emotions.

Courage

Spirituality does not imply passivity in the face of injustice. His own life ultimately became an example of moral courage.

Guru Tegh Bahadur's Bani

The compositions of Guru Tegh Bahadur form part of the Guru Granth Sahib, the central scripture of Sikhism.

His hymns deal with profound questions concerning:

  • mortality,

  • attachment,

  • fear,

  • suffering,

  • spiritual liberation,

  • remembrance of God,

  • the temporary nature of worldly possessions, and

  • inner stability.

His writings are especially known for their emphasis on maintaining spiritual balance amid the uncertainties of life.

This literary and spiritual contribution is important for understanding Guru Tegh Bahadur not merely as a martyr but also as a major religious thinker.

Historical Background to His Martyrdom

Guru Tegh Bahadur lived during the reign of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Sikh historical tradition records that a group of Kashmiri Pandits, facing religious persecution, approached Guru Tegh Bahadur for assistance.

Guru Tegh Bahadur decided to stand for their right to practise their religion.

The significance of this decision lies in an important principle: he was defending the religious freedom of a community different from his own.

His position consequently came to symbolise a wider defence of freedom of conscience and faith.

Arrest and Martyrdom

Guru Tegh Bahadur was eventually arrested and taken to Delhi.

Sikh tradition also remembers the martyrdom of three of his companions:

  • Bhai Mati Das

  • Bhai Sati Das

  • Bhai Dayala

They are remembered for refusing to abandon their faith despite extreme persecution.

Guru Tegh Bahadur was subsequently executed in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, in 1675, during the reign of Aurangzeb.

His martyrdom became one of the defining events in Sikh history.

Why is Guru Tegh Bahadur Called “Hind di Chadar”?

Guru Tegh Bahadur is reverentially remembered as “Hind di Chadar”, commonly understood as the “Shield of India” or “Protector of India.”

The title reflects the memory of his sacrifice for the protection of faith and human dignity.

His martyrdom is particularly remarkable because he is remembered for defending the freedom of another religious community to preserve its beliefs.

For this reason, his legacy is frequently discussed in the wider context of religious freedom, moral courage and freedom of conscience.

What Happened After His Martyrdom?

According to Sikh tradition, after Guru Tegh Bahadur's execution, Bhai Jaita carried his severed head from Delhi.

The head was ultimately taken to Anandpur Sahib, where it was cremated with due rites.

Guru Tegh Bahadur's body was taken by Lakhi Shah Vanjara.

Tradition holds that because openly cremating the body was dangerous, Lakhi Shah set his own house on fire to perform the cremation.

These events are commemorated by important Sikh shrines in Delhi and Punjab.

Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib

Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib is located in Chandni Chowk, Delhi.

It commemorates the place traditionally associated with the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

It is today one of Delhi's important Sikh religious and historical sites.

Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib

Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in New Delhi is associated with the cremation of Guru Tegh Bahadur's body.

According to Sikh tradition, Lakhi Shah Vanjara performed the cremation by burning his house with the Guru's body inside.

The shrine commemorates this episode.

Guru Gobind Singh and the Legacy of Guru Tegh Bahadur

After Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom, his son Guru Gobind Singh became the tenth Sikh Guru.

Guru Gobind Singh carried forward the Sikh tradition of spiritual discipline combined with resistance to oppression.

In 1699 at Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa.

Thus, the history of Guru Tegh Bahadur's sacrifice is closely connected with the subsequent development of Sikh institutions and identity under Guru Gobind Singh.

Significance of His Martyrdom

The martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur can be understood at several levels.

Defence of Freedom of Conscience

His sacrifice represents the principle that individuals should be able to follow their faith according to their conscience.

Resistance to Religious Persecution

His decision to accept death rather than abandon principle became a powerful symbol of resistance to coercion.

Sacrifice for Others

One of the most important aspects of his legacy is that Sikh tradition remembers him as sacrificing himself to defend people belonging to another religious community.

Moral Courage

His life demonstrates that courage can involve accepting personal suffering to defend a larger ethical principle.

Sikh History

His martyrdom was a major turning point in the development of the Sikh community and influenced the historical environment in which Guru Gobind Singh later led the Panth.

350th Shaheedi Diwas

The 350th anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom was commemorated in 2025.

The Government of India organized a year-long commemoration.

A major national event was held at Kurukshetra, Haryana, on 25 November 2025.

A commemorative coin and special postage stamp honoring Guru Tegh Bahadur were released during the programme.

The anniversary brought his message of courage, service, faith and sacrifice into renewed national focus.
