Detailed Explanation /

English

The Dandi March (Salt March) was one of the most significant events in the Indian Freedom Movement and marked the beginning of the Civil Disobedience Movement.

Mahatma Gandhi started the march from Sabarmati Ashram on 12 March 1930 and reached Dandi on 6 April 1930 after covering about 390 km.

At Dandi, Gandhi symbolically broke the British Salt Law by making salt from seawater.

Why was the Salt Satyagraha launched?

The British government:

  • Held a monopoly over salt production.
  • Imposed a salt tax.
  • Prohibited Indians from producing salt independently.

Gandhi chose salt because it was a basic necessity used by every Indian.
