The National Gopal Ratna Awards recognise contributions to India's livestock and dairy sector. They are administered by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
Launch and Background
The awards were launched in 2021 under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission. The mission focuses on the development and conservation of indigenous bovine breeds and improvement of bovine productivity.
Objectives
The awards encourage dairy farmers, cooperative institutions, milk producer organisations and artificial insemination technicians to improve productivity, breeding practices and dairy-sector services. They also draw attention to the role of indigenous cattle and buffalo breeds in rural livelihoods.
Major Award Categories
- Best dairy farmer rearing indigenous cattle or buffalo breeds.
- Best dairy cooperative society, milk producer company or dairy farmer producer organisation.
- Best artificial insemination technician.
Special Recognition
The award framework also provides special recognition for the northeastern region and Himalayan states to encourage dairy development in geographically challenging areas.
Prize Structure
For the first two categories, the stated cash awards are ₹5 lakh for first place, ₹3 lakh for second place and ₹2 lakh for third place. The special award carries ₹2 lakh. Certificates and mementoes are also provided according to the category. The artificial insemination technician category provides a certificate of merit and a memento rather than the same cash-prize structure.
Importance of Indigenous Breeds
Indigenous bovine breeds are part of India's animal genetic resources. Conservation helps preserve useful traits such as adaptation to local climates and resistance to certain environmental stresses. Scientific breeding, veterinary care and balanced feeding remain essential for productivity.

उद्देश्य
इन पुरस्कारों के माध्यम से दुग्ध उत्पादक किसानों, सहकारी संस्थाओं, दुग्ध उत्पादक संगठनों और कृत्रिम गर्भाधान तकनीशियनों को उत्पादकता, प्रजनन पद्धतियों और डेयरी सेवाओं में सुधार के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया जाता है। ये ग्रामीण आजीविका में देशी गाय और भैंस की नस्लों के महत्व को भी रेखांकित करते हैं।
प्रमुख पुरस्कार श्रेणियाँ
- देशी गाय अथवा भैंस की नस्लें पालने वाला सर्वश्रेष्ठ दुग्ध उत्पादक किसान।
- सर्वश्रेष्ठ डेयरी सहकारी समिति, दुग्ध उत्पादक कंपनी अथवा डेयरी किसान उत्पादक संगठन।
- सर्वश्रेष्ठ कृत्रिम गर्भाधान तकनीशियन।
विशेष मान्यता
पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र और हिमालयी राज्यों में डेयरी विकास को बढ़ावा देने के लिए विशेष पुरस्कार का प्रावधान भी है।
पुरस्कार राशि
पहली दो श्रेणियों में घोषित नकद पुरस्कार प्रथम स्थान के लिए पाँच लाख रुपये, द्वितीय स्थान के लिए तीन लाख रुपये और तृतीय स्थान के लिए दो लाख रुपये हैं। विशेष पुरस्कार में दो लाख रुपये दिए जाते हैं। श्रेणी के अनुसार प्रमाणपत्र और स्मृति-चिह्न भी प्रदान किए जाते हैं। कृत्रिम गर्भाधान तकनीशियन श्रेणी में समान नकद पुरस्कार व्यवस्था के बजाय योग्यता प्रमाणपत्र और स्मृति-चिह्न दिए जाते हैं।
देशी नस्लों का महत्व
देशी गोवंशीय नस्लें भारत के पशु आनुवंशिक संसाधनों का हिस्सा हैं। इनके संरक्षण से स्थानीय जलवायु के अनुकूलन और कुछ पर्यावरणीय दबावों को सहन करने जैसे उपयोगी गुण सुरक्षित रहते हैं। उत्पादकता बढ़ाने के लिए वैज्ञानिक प्रजनन, पशु चिकित्सा और संतुलित आहार भी आवश्यक हैं।
