National Parks of India: State-wise Important Parks, Wildlife, UNESCO Sites & Exam Facts

भारत के राष्ट्रीय उद्यान: राज्यवार प्रमुख उद्यान, वन्यजीव, यूनेस्को स्थल एवं परीक्षा तथ्य

ENGLISH SECTION

Introduction

India is one of the world's major biodiversity-rich countries. Its enormous geographical diversity includes:

  • Himalayan mountains,

  • tropical forests,

  • grasslands,

  • deserts,

  • wetlands,

  • mangrove forests,

  • coastal ecosystems,

  • islands,

  • high-altitude ecosystems.

To conserve important ecosystems, habitats, plants and wild animals, India has established different categories of Protected Areas.

One of the most important categories is:

National Park

National Parks are particularly important for examinations such as UPSC, SSC, Railway, Defence, State PSC and other government examinations.

Questions are commonly asked about:

  • National Park and state matching,

  • famous animals,

  • India's first National Park,

  • UNESCO World Heritage Sites,

  • Tiger Reserves,

  • Biosphere Reserves,

  • rivers flowing through parks,

  • mangrove and desert ecosystems.

What is a National Park?

A National Park is a legally protected area established for conserving wildlife, habitats and ecological systems.

In India, National Parks are protected primarily under the:

Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972

National Parks receive a high degree of legal protection.

Activities such as hunting and exploitation of wildlife are prohibited except under narrowly defined legal circumstances.

The objective is to conserve the ecosystem and wildlife of the protected area.

National Park vs Wildlife Sanctuary

Students frequently confuse these two.

FeatureNational ParkWildlife Sanctuary
Main ObjectiveStrong ecosystem and wildlife protectionWildlife and habitat protection
Legal ProtectionHighly protectedProtected
Human ActivitiesMore restrictedCertain regulated activities may be possible
BoundaryLegally definedLegally notified
HuntingProhibitedProhibited except as permitted by law

The exact legal rules should always be understood under the Wild Life (Protection) Act and relevant notifications.

National Park vs Biosphere Reserve

A Biosphere Reserve is generally much larger and follows a broader conservation approach.

It may contain:

  • core areas,

  • buffer zones,

  • transition areas.

A Biosphere Reserve may contain one or more:

  • National Parks,

  • Wildlife Sanctuaries,

  • other landscapes.

Therefore:

National Park ≠ Biosphere Reserve

For example, the broader Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve contains several important protected landscapes.

India's First National Park

The first National Park established in India was:

Jim Corbett National Park

It was established in:

1936

in present-day:

Uttarakhand

It was originally known as:

Hailey National Park

Exam Formula

First National Park → Jim Corbett → Uttarakhand → 1936

The:

Ramganga River

is closely associated with the park.

Project Tiger and Corbett

India launched:

Project Tiger

in:

1973

Corbett was among the original landscapes included in the tiger conservation programme.

Important Distinction

National Park → Protected-area category

A National Park and a Tiger Reserve are therefore not necessarily the same geographical or legal unit.
