Recently, the Reserve Bank of India proposed to relax due diligence requirements for MSMEs to onboard the Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS) platform, aiming to improve ease of doing business.

TReDS is an electronic platform designed to facilitate the financing and discounting of trade receivables of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through multiple financiers.

Trade receivables refer to invoices raised by MSMEs against buyers such as corporates, government departments, and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

The main objective of TReDS is to help MSMEs convert their invoices into cash quickly, thereby improving their working capital and liquidity position.

How TReDS Works

MSMEs upload their invoices on the platform, which are then accepted by buyers.

Once accepted, multiple financiers (banks/NBFCs) bid to discount the invoice.

The MSME receives immediate payment at a discounted value, while the financier collects the full amount from the buyer at maturity.

Participants in TReDS

  • Sellers: Only MSMEs
  • Buyers: Corporates, Government Departments, PSUs
  • Financiers: Banks, NBFC-Factors, and other financial institutions approved by RBI

Participation in TReDS is not mandatory for all, but certain categories of companies are required by the government to register as buyers.

Significance

TReDS improves cash flow for MSMEs, reduces dependency on traditional loans, enhances transparency, and promotes digital financial inclusion.

The RBI’s move to simplify onboarding is expected to increase MSME participation and strengthen the credit ecosystem.
