Vitamin K | विटामिन K
English Notes
Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin required for the normal functioning of several proteins involved in blood clotting and bone metabolism. It is present in different tissues, including the liver, brain, heart, pancreas and bone.
Types of Vitamin K
Vitamin K1 is called phylloquinone and is found mainly in green leafy vegetables. Vitamin K2 refers to a group of compounds called menaquinones, which occur in certain animal-derived and fermented foods. Some intestinal bacteria can also produce menaquinones.
Dietary Sources
Common sources include spinach, kale, cabbage and other green leafy vegetables. Certain fermented foods provide vitamin K2. The quantity varies by food and preparation method.
Role in Blood Clotting
Vitamin K is necessary for the activation of several clotting proteins. These include prothrombin, also called clotting factor II, and factors VII, IX and X. Deficiency can impair normal clot formation and increase bleeding risk.
Role in Bone Health
Osteocalcin is a vitamin K-dependent protein associated with bone tissue. Vitamin K participates in the activation of proteins involved in bone metabolism, although supplementation is not a substitute for a balanced diet or treatment of bone disease.
Deficiency
Vitamin K deficiency can cause abnormal bleeding or easy bruising. Newborn babies are particularly vulnerable because their vitamin K stores are low. Disorders affecting fat absorption and certain medicines can also increase deficiency risk.
Vitamin K and Medicines
Warfarin acts by interfering with vitamin K-dependent clotting processes. People taking warfarin should follow medical guidance about maintaining a consistent vitamin K intake rather than abruptly changing their diet.
