Which feature of the Harappan Civilization best indicates concern for urban sanitation?
Correct Answer
A. Covered drainage systemA.
Explanation
The covered drainage system is one of the strongest indicators of Harappan concern for urban sanitation.
In many settlements, household wastewater flowed through small drains into larger drains constructed alongside streets.
These drains were often covered with bricks or slabs and incorporated arrangements that allowed periodic cleaning.
Bathrooms and washing spaces inside houses were frequently connected to the drainage network.
Numerous wells, particularly at Mohenjo-daro, supplied water to residents.
Such civic infrastructure demonstrates that Harappan planners paid substantial attention to everyday urban services.
The sophistication of the drainage system distinguishes Harappan cities from many contemporary settlements elsewhere.
This does not mean every house or settlement had exactly the same facilities, because significant regional and social variation existed.
However, drainage remained a defining characteristic of Mature Harappan urbanism.
There is no evidence for giant pyramids like those of Egypt, and securely identified royal palaces are absent from the archaeological record.
Amphitheatres belong to other historical traditions.
For examinations, Harappan town planning should immediately suggest grid streets, covered drains, bathrooms, wells and standardized bricks.
