The term Harappan Civilization is often considered more geographically accurate because numerous settlements belonging to the same cultural tradition have been discovered far beyond the immediate Indus Valley.
Harappan sites extend across present-day Pakistan and large parts of northwestern and western India, including Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, with Harappan-related material reaching still farther in some contexts.
Sites such as Rakhigarhi, Kalibangan, Dholavira, Lothal and Alamgirpur demonstrate this extensive distribution.
The name Harappan Civilization derives from Harappa, one of the first major sites where this archaeological culture was clearly identified.
Archaeological cultures are often named after a type-site or early representative site.
The term Indus Valley Civilization remains widely used and is historically familiar, but it can misleadingly suggest that the civilization was restricted to the Indus river valley.
It was not.
The broad geographic distribution also helps explain differences between settlements in architecture, agriculture and local resources.
For examinations, both names refer broadly to the same civilization, but Harappan Civilization is the more inclusive archaeological term.
