72. Which varna is first explicitly mentioned as the fourth varna in the Purusha Sukta?
Correct Answer
B. Shudra
Explanation
The Shudra is explicitly included as the fourth varna in the Purusha Sukta of the tenth Mandala of the Rigveda.
The hymn symbolically derives the four social categories from the cosmic being Purusha: Brahmana from the mouth, Rajanya or Kshatriya from the arms, Vaishya from the thighs and Shudra from the feet.
This passage is significant because the fourfold varna scheme is not equally prominent throughout the older portions of the Rigveda.
Earlier society appears to have been organized more strongly around kinship, tribe, household and occupational differences without the same degree of formalized hereditary hierarchy visible in Later Vedic literature.
During the Later Vedic period, the varna system became more clearly articulated.
Brahmanas gained ritual authority, Kshatriyas exercised political and military power, Vaishyas were associated with agriculture, pastoralism and trade, and Shudras occupied a subordinate position.
However, actual social life was more complex than a simple four-category model.
The later development of numerous jatis should not be projected unchanged back into the Rigvedic period.
The Purusha Sukta is therefore important both religiously and historically, but it should be interpreted as a textual representation of an emerging social ideology rather than a complete census of society.
For examinations, the appearance of Shudra in the Purusha Sukta is a standard question.
