Correct Answer
B. Philosophical inquiry into ultimate reality and the self
Explanation
The Upanishads are primarily philosophical texts concerned with questions about ultimate reality, the nature of the self, knowledge, existence, karma, rebirth and liberation.
Two central concepts are Brahman, the ultimate or universal reality, and Atman, the inner self.
Different Upanishads explore their relationship in varied ways, and later Indian philosophical traditions developed multiple interpretations of these teachings.
The Upanishads emerged within the broader Vedic tradition and are often called Vedanta, meaning the end or culmination of the Veda, both because of their textual position and their philosophical significance.
Important early Upanishads include Brihadaranyaka, Chandogya, Kena, Katha, Aitareya, Taittiriya and others.
The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad contains important dialogues involving Yajnavalkya, Gargi and Maitreyi.
The Chandogya Upanishad includes the famous teaching 'Tat Tvam Asi' in the dialogue between Uddalaka and Shvetaketu.
Upanishadic thought reflects a movement toward internal knowledge and contemplation in contrast to exclusive reliance on external ritual performance.
This does not mean that all Upanishads simply reject ritual; rather, they often reinterpret the purpose of religious knowledge.
Concepts developed in the Upanishads profoundly influenced Vedanta, Buddhism, Jainism and broader Indian intellectual history.
For examinations, associate Upanishads with philosophy, Brahman, Atman, knowledge and liberation.
