A. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

Explanation

'Aham Brahmasmi', usually translated as 'I am Brahman', occurs in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad.
It became one of the four celebrated Mahavakyas in later Vedantic tradition.
The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is among the oldest and most extensive Upanishads and is associated with the Shukla Yajurveda through the Shatapatha Brahmana tradition.
It contains major philosophical dialogues on the nature of the self, ultimate reality, death, knowledge and liberation.
The sage Yajnavalkya is one of its central figures.
His discussions with Maitreyi explore immortality and the nature of the self, while his debate with Gargi Vachaknavi addresses profound questions about the basis of existence. 'Aham Brahmasmi' expresses a profound relationship between the individual self and ultimate reality, though its precise interpretation differs among later schools of Vedanta.
Advaita Vedanta reads it in a strongly non-dualistic sense, whereas other Vedantic traditions interpret the relationship differently.
For objective examinations, the textual association is the key point.
Students should also remember the other commonly cited Mahavakyas: Tat Tvam Asi—Chandogya; Prajnanam Brahma—Aitareya; Ayam Atma Brahma—Mandukya.
These four pairings are useful for UPSC, SSC and state-level examinations.
