90. Which Upanishad contains the dialogue between Nachiketa and Yama?
Correct Answer
A. Katha Upanishad
Explanation
The dialogue between Nachiketa and Yama, the lord of death, forms the central philosophical narrative of the Katha Upanishad.
Nachiketa is a young seeker whose father, during a sacrifice, angrily declares that he gives him to Death.
Nachiketa reaches the abode of Yama and, after waiting there, is granted three boons.
For his most important boon, he asks about the mystery of what happens after death and the nature of the self.
Yama initially tests him by offering wealth, long life and worldly pleasures, but Nachiketa rejects these temporary rewards and insists on higher knowledge.
Yama then teaches him about Atman, self-control, the distinction between the good and the merely pleasant, and the path toward liberation.
One famous metaphor compares the body to a chariot, the senses to horses, the mind to reins, the intellect to the charioteer and the self to the master of the chariot.
The Katha Upanishad is therefore important for understanding Upanishadic ideas about death, immortality and spiritual discipline.
It is traditionally associated with the Krishna Yajurveda.
For examinations, the combination Nachiketa—Yama—Katha Upanishad is one of the most frequently tested Upanishadic associations.
