Gautama Buddha was born at which of the following places?
Correct Answer
B. LumbiniB.
Explanation
Gautama Buddha was born at Lumbini, located in present-day Nepal.
He was born as Siddhartha Gautama into the Shakya clan.
His father was Suddhodana and his mother was Maya or Mahamaya.
Buddhist tradition associates his upbringing with Kapilavastu, the principal centre of the Shakyas.
Lumbini's identification as Buddha's birthplace is strongly associated with an inscription on a pillar erected by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka during his pilgrimage.
The inscription records Ashoka's visit to the place connected with Buddha's birth.
Lumbini is therefore one of Buddhism's four principal sacred places.
Students sometimes confuse Lumbini with Kapilavastu: Lumbini is associated with Buddha's birth, while Kapilavastu is associated with his early life as Prince Siddhartha.
Ashoka's role in marking Buddhist sacred sites is also important for examinations because his inscriptions provide valuable historical evidence for Buddhism in ancient India.
