Which of the following is NOT a component of the Noble Eightfold Path?
Correct Answer
D. Right SacrificeD.
Explanation
Right Sacrifice is not one of the eight elements of the Noble Eightfold Path.
The Eightfold Path consists of Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration.
These are not necessarily eight sequential stages; rather, they represent mutually supporting dimensions of Buddhist practice.
They are often grouped under three broad categories: wisdom, ethical conduct and mental discipline.
Right View and Right Intention are associated with wisdom; Right Speech, Right Action and Right Livelihood with ethical conduct; and Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration with mental discipline.
Early Buddhism placed emphasis on ethical behaviour and mental cultivation rather than the performance of Vedic sacrifices as the means to liberation.
This made Buddhist teachings part of the wider Shramana intellectual environment of ancient India.
