Explanation
Pratityasamutpada, commonly translated as dependent origination or dependent arising, is a central Buddhist doctrine.
It explains that phenomena do not arise independently or from a single eternal cause; they occur in dependence upon causes and conditions.
In discussions of suffering and rebirth, the principle is often illustrated through a chain of twelve links, beginning with ignorance and including formations, consciousness, name-and-form, sense bases, contact, feeling, craving, clinging, becoming, birth, and ageing-and-death.
The precise interpretation of these links developed across Buddhist traditions, but the basic principle of conditionality remained fundamental.
Dependent origination helps explain why suffering can cease: if the conditions sustaining craving and ignorance are removed, the resulting cycle can also cease.
Anekantavada and Syadvada are especially associated with Jainism, whereas Advaita became a major Vedantic philosophical tradition.
