According to Buddhist tradition, the First Buddhist Council was held at Rajagriha, or Rajagaha, shortly after Buddha's Mahaparinirvana.
It is traditionally associated with the patronage of Magadhan ruler Ajatashatru and the leadership of the elder Mahakassapa or Mahakashyapa.
The council's purpose was to preserve and recite Buddha's teachings and monastic discipline.
Tradition associates Ananda with the recitation of discourses and Upali with the recitation of monastic rules.
