What was the method of election of the members of the Constituent Assembly according to the source?
Correct Answer
B. Indirect electionB.
Explanation
According to the source, the members of the Constituent Assembly were chosen through an indirect election.
The source also states on the following page that members of the Constituent Assembly were elected by the Provincial Legislative Assemblies.
These two facts complement each other.
The Assembly was therefore not constituted through a direct election by the entire population.
The Cabinet Mission Plan provided the framework for the Constituent Assembly, and elections for its formation were held in July-August 1946.
The source gives the original total membership as 389.
It also provides the party-wise result for 296 seats associated with British India: Congress 208, Muslim League 73 and Others 15.
Since the Provincial Legislative Assemblies acted in selecting members, the source characterises the method as indirect election.
This is a frequently tested point because students may incorrectly assume that a body framing a democratic Constitution must itself have been directly elected through universal adult franchise.
For this source-based question, the method was indirect election.
