Fundamental Duties are generally described as non-justiciable.
This means that Article 51A itself does not ordinarily provide an individual with a direct constitutional remedy to compel another citizen to perform a Fundamental Duty in the same manner in which certain Fundamental Rights can be enforced through constitutional remedies.
Their non-justiciable character, however, does not make them constitutionally insignificant.
They state standards of responsible citizenship and may be relevant to legislation and constitutional interpretation.
Parliament can enact laws concerning matters that overlap with Fundamental Duties, and conduct relating to national symbols, environmental protection, public property and similar subjects may consequently be governed by enforceable statutory provisions.
Fundamental Duties must therefore be distinguished from Fundamental Rights.
Fundamental Rights principally provide constitutionally protected entitlements, whereas Fundamental Duties express responsibilities expected of citizens.
The important examination point is that the duties themselves are generally non-justiciable.
