Why in News?

On 3 October 2026, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology announced the successful demonstration of India's first free-space Quantum Key Distribution link at a distance of 5.56 kilometres. The achievement resulted from collaboration among QNu Labs, the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics and the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar.

The field trial was conducted during the night of 27–28 September 2026 between BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar in Gujarat. The demonstration established a quantum communication channel through the open atmosphere without using an optical fibre connection between the two sites.

The trial achieved a Quantum Bit Error Rate below 5% and generated secure cryptographic keys at a rate of approximately 230–260 bits per second. These keys were integrated with BISAG-N's Vedic Kavach platform to demonstrate successful encryption and decryption of test messages.

What Is Quantum Key Distribution?

Quantum Key Distribution, commonly abbreviated QKD, is a method of distributing cryptographic keys using principles of quantum mechanics. Cryptographic keys are secret values used by encryption systems to protect information.

In suitable QKD protocols, information is encoded in quantum states of light. Attempts to intercept or measure these states can introduce detectable disturbances. By analysing measurement results and error rates, communicating parties can assess whether secure key material can be established.

QKD distributes encryption keys; it does not automatically encrypt ordinary messages by itself. The generated keys must be used with an appropriate encryption system to protect communication.

What Is Free-Space Quantum Communication?

Free-space quantum communication transmits optical quantum signals through an unguided path such as the atmosphere instead of sending them through a physical optical fibre.

This approach may be useful where laying fibre is difficult, expensive or impractical. Possible future applications include communication between buildings, remote installations and satellite-ground stations.

However, free-space communication is affected by atmospheric conditions, beam alignment, background light and obstacles. The successful 5.56 km demonstration was a ground-based field trial and should not be confused with an operational satellite communication link.

Which Organisations Participated?

Three organisations collaborated in the demonstration. QNu Labs provided quantum communication technology and optical tracking equipment. BISAG-N contributed its Vedic Kavach platform for post-quantum cryptography-enabled applications. IIT Gandhinagar participated in the field demonstration and research environment.

The project illustrates collaboration among a technology enterprise, a government scientific institution and an academic institution.

About QNu Labs

QNu Labs is an Indian technology enterprise working on quantum-secure communication and cybersecurity solutions. Its Armos Quantum Key Distribution device was used in the field trial.

The company also supplied a Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking system to maintain alignment between the optical transmitter and receiver.

About BISAG-N

BISAG-N stands for Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics. It is an autonomous scientific society under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

The institution works in areas including space applications, satellite communication, geospatial technology and technology-supported public services.

For this demonstration, BISAG-N integrated the quantum-generated keys with its Vedic Kavach platform.

About IIT Gandhinagar

The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar is a higher educational and research institution located in Gujarat. It participated in the demonstration by contributing to the field-testing environment and research collaboration.

The experiment highlights the importance of academic institutions in translating advanced scientific concepts into practical technological applications.

What Is the Armos QKD Device?

Armos is the quantum key distribution technology developed by QNu Labs and used in the demonstration. It supports the transmission and processing of quantum signals required for establishing cryptographic keys.

The device formed the hardware-based quantum security component of the trial. The generated keys were subsequently used by a separate encryption application.

What Is the Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking System?

Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking, abbreviated PAT, refers to the process of directing an optical communication beam, locating the receiving terminal and maintaining alignment during operation.

Precise alignment is especially important for free-space optical communication because narrow beams must reach the intended receiver despite environmental disturbances.

In the 5.56 km trial, QNu Labs used its PAT system to maintain the optical communication channel between the two sites.

What Is the Quantum Bit Error Rate?

Quantum Bit Error Rate, abbreviated QBER, measures the proportion of mismatched bits in the relevant quantum key measurement results.

A higher error rate can indicate noise, equipment imperfections, environmental interference or possible interception. Error-rate analysis is therefore an important part of evaluating quantum key distribution.

During the reported demonstration, the QBER remained below 5%. This was the measured performance reported for the trial and should not be interpreted as a universal security threshold for every QKD protocol.

What Does 230–260 Bits Per Second Mean?

The reported secure key rate was approximately 230–260 bits per second. This refers to the rate at which usable cryptographic key material was generated during the demonstration.

It does not mean that ordinary internet data or encrypted messages were transmitted at only 230–260 bits per second. The speed of the encrypted communication channel and the rate of generating cryptographic keys are different measurements.

What Is Vedic Kavach?

Vedic Kavach is BISAG-N's post-quantum cryptography-enabled platform. During the demonstration, keys generated through the quantum communication channel were integrated with this platform.

The participating organisations reported successful encryption and decryption of test messages using the integrated arrangement.

This showed that quantum key distribution hardware could work with an application incorporating post-quantum cryptographic capabilities.

What Is Post-Quantum Cryptography?

Post-Quantum Cryptography, abbreviated PQC, refers to cryptographic algorithms designed to resist attacks from both conventional and sufficiently capable future quantum computers.

Unlike QKD, post-quantum cryptography generally relies on mathematical algorithms that can operate on conventional computing and communication infrastructure.

QKD and PQC are different approaches. QKD uses quantum physical processes to distribute keys, while PQC uses cryptographic algorithms intended to remain secure against quantum-enabled attacks.

Difference Between QKD and PQC

Quantum Key Distribution requires specialised equipment for exchanging quantum signals. Its security properties depend on the protocol, implementation and assumptions about the equipment and communication environment.

Post-Quantum Cryptography can be implemented in software and conventional digital systems, subject to appropriate algorithms and secure implementation.

Combining the two approaches may provide complementary protection. However, no cryptographic technology should be described as unconditionally immune to every possible attack.

What Is Quantum Cryptography?

Quantum cryptography applies quantum-mechanical principles to selected information-security tasks. Quantum key distribution is one of its best-known applications.

The underlying science includes the behaviour of photons, quantum states and the effects of measurement. Practical systems must also address engineering problems such as signal loss, detector noise and equipment security.

What Is a Photon?

A photon is a quantum of electromagnetic radiation. Light can be described in terms of photons, and their quantum properties can be used to encode information.

Quantum communication systems use carefully controlled optical signals to exchange information needed for establishing secure keys.

What Is the No-Cloning Theorem?

The quantum no-cloning theorem states that an arbitrary unknown quantum state cannot be copied perfectly in a universal manner.

This principle helps explain why quantum information differs from ordinary classical information. It contributes to the theoretical foundations of several quantum communication protocols.

Nevertheless, practical QKD security also depends on the details of the protocol and its implementation.

Why Is Quantum Communication Important?

Modern digital systems depend on cryptography to protect financial transactions, government communication, industrial networks and personal information.

Advances in quantum computing could threaten certain widely used public-key cryptographic systems. Developing quantum-resistant security technologies is therefore an important area of research and investment.

The 5.56 km demonstration contributes to India's efforts to develop domestic expertise in advanced communication security.

Importance for Defence Communication

Secure communication is essential for defence operations, where unauthorised interception or manipulation of information can create serious risks.

Free-space quantum communication could potentially support specialised secure links between suitable locations. However, actual defence deployment would require further testing, integration, operational evaluation and reliable performance under varied conditions.

Importance for Satellite Communication

Satellite-based quantum communication is a potential future application of free-space optical technologies. Such systems would need to transmit quantum signals between ground stations and satellites or between satellites.

The 2026 demonstration was conducted between two ground locations. It provided experience with atmospheric optical transmission but did not itself demonstrate satellite-to-ground quantum key distribution.

Challenges in Free-Space QKD

Free-space quantum communication faces several technical challenges. Fog, heavy rain, atmospheric turbulence and background light can affect the optical signal. Physical obstacles and inaccurate beam alignment can also interrupt communication.

Equipment cost, secure implementation and integration with existing communication systems are additional considerations.

Further research is needed before technologies demonstrated in controlled field trials can be deployed reliably across larger operational networks.

What Is the National Quantum Mission?

India's National Quantum Mission is a government initiative intended to strengthen research, development and innovation in quantum technologies.

Its major areas include quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and quantum materials.

The mission was approved in April 2023 with an allocation of ₹6,003.65 crore for the period 2023–24 to 2030–31. The Department of Science and Technology plays the central coordinating role.

The free-space QKD demonstration is relevant to the broader national effort to develop quantum communication capabilities. It should not automatically be treated as a separate funding announcement under the mission.

Quantum Computing and Cybersecurity

Quantum computers use quantum information processing principles. Certain quantum algorithms could, if implemented at sufficient scale, undermine some existing public-key cryptographic methods.

This risk motivates research into post-quantum cryptography and other secure communication technologies.

Quantum computers do not automatically defeat all forms of encryption, and the security of a system depends on the algorithms, key lengths and implementation methods used.

Why Is This Achievement Significant for India?

The demonstration showed that Indian institutions could integrate free-space quantum communication hardware with a post-quantum cryptography-enabled application in an outdoor field environment.

The reported results included a 5.56 km optical link, a QBER below 5% and secure key generation at 230–260 bits per second.

The achievement provides a basis for additional research into longer-distance and more robust quantum-secure communication systems.
