Why is India-Nepal Electricity Trade in News?

India has approved Nepal's request to import electricity for up to 18 hours each day between 13 September and 31 December 2026. The decision comes after floods damaged hydropower infrastructure in Nepal and reduced domestic electricity availability.

The arrangement demonstrates the increasing importance of cross-border electricity trade in South Asia.

How Much Power Can Nepal Import?

Nepal has been permitted to import up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV transmission line.

An additional 54 MW can be supplied through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV transmission line.

Import Window

The approved import window runs from midnight to 6 PM each day, providing Nepal with up to 18 hours of electricity imports.

The arrangement is designed partly around India's daytime electricity availability, including increasing solar generation.

Why Did Nepal Need Additional Electricity?

Nepal generates a large share of its electricity from hydropower. Floods and damage to hydropower infrastructure can sharply reduce generation capacity.

Hydropower production can also vary seasonally depending on river flows.

What is Hydropower?

Hydropower generates electricity by using the energy of flowing or falling water to rotate turbines connected to electrical generators.

It is a renewable source of energy, but generation can depend on water availability and reservoir conditions.

India-Nepal Power Trade

India and Nepal have developed increasingly integrated electricity systems through cross-border transmission lines.

Nepal can import electricity from India when domestic generation is insufficient and export surplus hydropower when conditions are favourable.

Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar Line

The Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar transmission corridor is a major high-voltage electricity link between India and Nepal.

Its 400 kV capacity makes it an important backbone for large-scale bilateral electricity exchange.

Tanakpur-Mahendranagar Line

The Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV line provides another electricity connection between the two countries.

Multiple cross-border links improve reliability and increase flexibility in power trading.

Why Voltage Matters

Electricity is transmitted at high voltage because higher voltage reduces energy losses for a given amount of power transmitted over long distances.

Large interstate and international transmission networks therefore commonly use high-voltage lines.

India's Solar Generation

India has rapidly expanded solar-power capacity. Solar output is strongest during daylight hours and can sometimes create surplus electricity during parts of the day.

Regional electricity trade can help utilise such surplus generation more efficiently.

Regional Grid Integration

Cross-border electricity trade can improve energy security by allowing neighbouring countries to share generation resources.

It can also help balance differences in demand patterns, seasonal hydropower availability and renewable-energy generation.

BBIN Energy Cooperation

Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal have significant potential for greater electricity cooperation because the region combines large hydropower resources with rapidly growing electricity demand.

Greater grid connectivity could improve reliability and support renewable-energy integration.

Nepal's Hydropower Potential

Nepal's mountainous terrain and extensive river systems provide significant hydropower potential.

Development of this potential can support Nepal's domestic electricity needs and create opportunities for electricity exports to neighbouring countries.

Energy Diplomacy

Cross-border power trade is not only an economic activity but also an important component of regional diplomacy.

Reliable electricity connectivity can deepen economic interdependence and strengthen bilateral relations.

Import Window

Hydropower

Power Trade

Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar Line

Tanakpur-Mahendranagar Line

High Voltage

Solar Generation

Regional Grid Integration

BBIN Energy Cooperation
