PART I — ENGLISH
1. Introduction
West Bengal has remarkable natural vegetation diversity because the state extends from the Eastern Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south. Its vegetation ranges from tropical and subtropical forests to temperate mountain forests, alpine vegetation at higher elevations and mangrove forests in the coastal delta.
The distribution of natural vegetation depends on rainfall, temperature, altitude, soil, drainage, salinity, slope and human activities.
The most important vegetation regions of West Bengal are:
Himalayan mountain forests of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
Moist forests of the Terai and Dooars.
Dry deciduous and sal-dominated forests of western West Bengal.
Scattered vegetation and cultivated landscapes of the Gangetic plains.
Mangrove forests of the Sundarbans.
Exam fact: The Sundarbans are famous for mangrove vegetation, whereas the western plateau fringe is strongly associated with sal-dominated deciduous forests.
2. Factors Controlling Natural Vegetation
2.1 Rainfall
Rainfall determines the availability of moisture for plants. High-rainfall regions of North Bengal support relatively dense, moisture-loving vegetation, while comparatively drier western districts support deciduous forests.
2.2 Temperature
Temperature influences plant growth, the length of the growing season and the distribution of forest types. Tropical vegetation predominates in warmer lowlands, while cooler mountain conditions support temperate vegetation.
2.3 Altitude
Altitude is particularly important in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills.
With increasing altitude, temperature generally decreases. Consequently, vegetation changes from lower-elevation tropical and subtropical formations to temperate forests and, at sufficiently high elevations, subalpine and alpine vegetation.
These belts overlap and vary with slope exposure, rainfall and local conditions. They should not be treated as rigid horizontal boundaries.
2.4 Soil
Soil depth, texture, fertility, acidity and drainage influence the vegetation that can grow in an area.
For example, sal forests are prominent in parts of the western uplands, while salt-tolerant mangroves occur in the coastal delta.
2.5 Salinity and Tidal Influence
The Sundarbans are influenced by tidal rivers, saline or brackish water, sediment deposition and waterlogging.
Mangrove species possess adaptations that enable them to survive in these challenging coastal conditions.
2.6 Human Activities
Agriculture, settlements, roads, mining, plantation development, logging and infrastructure expansion have altered natural vegetation across West Bengal.
Afforestation, protected areas, community participation and ecological restoration are important conservation responses.
3. Major Forest Types of West Bengal
| Forest type | Important region | Main characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Tropical moist deciduous | Terai-Dooars and suitable northern areas | Moisture-loving trees; seasonal leaf fall |
| Tropical dry deciduous | Western plateau fringe | Deciduous trees adapted to seasonal dryness |
| Subtropical and temperate hill forests | Darjeeling-Kalimpong | Vegetation varies with altitude and climate |
| Subalpine and alpine vegetation | Higher Himalayan elevations | Cold-adapted shrubs, grasses and other vegetation |
| Mangrove forests | Sundarbans | Salt-tolerant trees and shrubs adapted to tidal conditions |
These are broad ecological groupings. Actual forest classifications and local species composition can be more detailed.
4. Forests of the Terai and Dooars
The Terai and Dooars occupy the Himalayan foothill belt of North Bengal.
Important districts associated with this forest landscape include Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and parts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
The region receives substantial monsoon rainfall and contains forests, grasslands, rivers and wetlands.
Important vegetation
Sal (Shorea robusta) is an important tree in several northern forest landscapes. Other vegetation includes mixed deciduous trees, bamboo, shrubs, grasses and riverine vegetation.
Forest composition changes with local soil, rainfall, drainage and disturbance.
Ecological importance
The Terai-Dooars landscape provides habitat and movement corridors for Asian elephants, Indian rhinoceroses in suitable protected grassland-wetland habitats, gaur, deer, leopards and many bird species.
Important distinction: The greater one-horned rhinoceros is especially associated with protected grassland and wetland habitats such as Jaldapara and Gorumara, not simply with dense sal forest.
5. Sal Forests of Western West Bengal
The western plateau fringe is associated with sal-dominated tropical deciduous forests.
Important districts include:
Purulia
Bankura
Jhargram
Paschim Medinipur
Parts of Birbhum and Paschim Bardhaman
Sal tree
Scientific name: Shorea robusta.
Sal is an important hardwood species. It is associated with several deciduous forest landscapes in eastern and central India.
Sal forests provide timber and other forest resources, support biodiversity and help protect soil.
Other vegetation
Depending on the locality, forests may include palash, mahua, kendu, bamboo and other deciduous species.
Palash: Butea monosperma, famous for its bright orange-red flowers.
Mahua: Madhuca longifolia, important for flowers, seeds and local livelihoods.
Kendu: Diospyros melanoxylon, whose leaves are used in bidi production.
Environmental concerns
Western forest landscapes face pressures from forest fragmentation, fire, grazing, extraction, mining and land-use change.
Appropriate restoration requires protecting native vegetation, improving soil moisture and managing fire and human-wildlife interactions.
6. Himalayan Forests of Darjeeling and Kalimpong
The Himalayan region supports vegetation that changes with altitude, temperature, rainfall and slope.
Lower elevations
Lower hill slopes support tropical and subtropical vegetation, including broadleaf forests and other moisture-loving species.
Middle elevations
Temperate broadleaf forests occur in suitable cooler and humid locations.
Trees may include oaks, magnolias, rhododendrons and other Himalayan broadleaf species, depending on elevation and site conditions.
Higher elevations
At higher elevations, vegetation may include conifers, rhododendrons, subalpine shrubs and alpine vegetation.
The exact altitudinal limits differ across the region.
Importance
Himalayan forests regulate runoff, protect mountain slopes, maintain habitats and contribute to watershed health.
Forest degradation can increase erosion and may aggravate landslide risk on vulnerable slopes.
7. Mangrove Forests of the Sundarbans
<text weight="medium">The Sundarbans are among the most important ecological regions of West Bengal.</text>
They form part of the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta shared by India and Bangladesh.
The Indian Sundarbans lie primarily within South 24 Parganas and parts of North 24 Parganas.
The landscape contains tidal rivers, creeks, mudflats, islands, estuaries and mangrove forests.
What are mangroves?
Mangroves are salt-tolerant trees, shrubs and associated plants adapted to coastal intertidal environments.
Not every mangrove species has the same salt tolerance or root structure.
Important mangrove species
| Common name | Scientific name |
|---|---|
| Sundari | Heritiera fomes |
| Gewa | Excoecaria agallocha |
| Keora | Sonneratia apetala |
| Goran | Ceriops decandra |
| Baen | Avicennia species |
Species distribution varies with salinity, freshwater availability, elevation and tidal conditions.
The Sundarbans name is commonly associated with the Sundari tree, although explanations of the name are not entirely uniform.
8. Adaptations of Mangrove Plants
8.1 Pneumatophores
Some mangrove plants develop specialized aerial roots called pneumatophores.
These roots help obtain oxygen in waterlogged, oxygen-poor sediments.
8.2 Salt Regulation
Mangrove species may exclude salt at their roots, secrete salt through leaves or manage salt internally.
Different species use different mechanisms.
8.3 Vivipary
In some mangroves, seeds begin germinating while still attached to the parent plant.
This adaptation can improve the chances of establishment in unstable tidal environments.
8.4 Specialized Roots
Some mangroves develop prop roots, knee roots or other specialized root systems that provide support and facilitate gas exchange.
Exam trap: All mangroves do not possess identical root structures, and vivipary is not equally developed in every species.
9. Ecological Importance of the Sundarbans
Coastal protection
Mangrove vegetation can reduce wave energy, trap sediment and provide a natural buffer against coastal hazards.
However, mangroves cannot completely prevent damage from powerful cyclones or storm surges.
Biodiversity
The Sundarbans support the Royal Bengal tiger, estuarine crocodile, spotted deer, fishing cat, various birds, fish and other aquatic organisms.
Fisheries
Mangrove creeks and estuarine habitats provide feeding, shelter and nursery environments for many aquatic species.
Carbon storage
Mangrove ecosystems store carbon in vegetation and waterlogged sediments, making them important in climate-change mitigation.
Livelihoods
Local communities depend on fisheries and other permitted forest-related activities. Sustainable management must consider conservation and livelihoods together.
10. Important National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries
10.1 Sundarbans National Park
Located in the Sundarbans of South 24 Parganas.
It is particularly associated with mangrove forests and the Royal Bengal tiger.
The national park is part of a wider protected and ecologically significant Sundarbans landscape.
10.2 Jaldapara National Park
Located in Alipurduar district.
It is particularly famous for the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
Its habitats include grasslands, riverine vegetation and forests.
10.3 Gorumara National Park
Located in Jalpaiguri district.
It is associated with rhinoceros conservation and the forests and grasslands of the Dooars.
10.4 Neora Valley National Park
Located in Kalimpong district.
It protects Himalayan forest ecosystems and is associated with species such as the red panda.
10.5 Singalila National Park
Located in Darjeeling district.
It is associated with high-altitude Himalayan ecosystems, rhododendrons and red panda habitat.
10.6 Buxa National Park
Located in Alipurduar district.
It is part of the wider Buxa forest landscape near the Bhutan border and is important for forest biodiversity and wildlife corridors.
Exam warning: National parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves and biosphere reserves are different conservation designations. A single landscape may contain more than one designation.
11. Important Tiger Reserves
Two especially important tiger reserves in West Bengal are:
Sundarban Tiger Reserve: A mangrove-dominated tiger habitat in the coastal delta.
Buxa Tiger Reserve: A forested protected landscape in North Bengal near Bhutan.
The two reserves represent very different ecological environments.
12. Biosphere Reserves
Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve
The Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve was established in 1989 and includes a wider ecological landscape than the national park alone.
Its conservation significance lies in mangroves, estuarine biodiversity, coastal ecology and human-environment interactions.
Exam trap: Sundarbans National Park, Sundarban Tiger Reserve and Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve should not be treated as exactly the same geographical or administrative unit.
13. UNESCO World Heritage Significance
The Sundarbans National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
Its outstanding importance is linked to mangrove ecosystems and biodiversity.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is also a UNESCO World Heritage property as part of the Mountain Railways of India, but it is a cultural heritage designation and not a forest-protection category.
14. Important Wildlife of West Bengal
| Animal | Important association |
|---|---|
| Royal Bengal tiger | Sundarbans |
| Greater one-horned rhinoceros | Jaldapara, Gorumara |
| Asian elephant | North Bengal forest landscapes |
| Red panda | Higher Himalayan forests |
| Estuarine crocodile | Sundarbans |
| Gaur | North Bengal forests |
| Spotted deer | Sundarbans and suitable other habitats |
Species distributions are not confined exclusively to the places shown.
15. Elephant Corridors and Human-Wildlife Conflict
North Bengal is important for elephant movement between forest patches, including transboundary landscapes near Bhutan.
Roads, railways, settlements and fragmented forests can obstruct wildlife movement.
Human-elephant conflict may involve crop damage, property damage and risks to people and animals.
Conservation measures include habitat connectivity, early-warning systems, safer infrastructure and community-based conflict reduction.
16. Forest Fires
Forest fires can damage vegetation, soil organisms, wildlife habitats and forest regeneration.
Fire risk is affected by dry vegetation, weather conditions and human activities.
The effects of fire depend on intensity, frequency and ecosystem characteristics.
Preventive measures include fire monitoring, community awareness, fuel management and rapid response.
17. Deforestation and Forest Degradation
Deforestation means the conversion of forest land to another land use.
Forest degradation means deterioration in forest condition, structure or ecological function without necessarily converting the land entirely to non-forest use.
Major pressures may include:
Agricultural and settlement expansion.
Infrastructure development.
Mining and quarrying.
Unsustainable extraction.
Forest fires.
Invasive species.
Fragmentation.
Climate-related stresses.
These pressures vary across the state.
18. Forest Conservation
Important conservation approaches include protected areas, restoration of native vegetation, community participation, wildlife corridors, sustainable forest-resource use and better monitoring.
In the Himalayas, slope stability and watershed protection are especially important.
In western West Bengal, soil-moisture conservation and restoration of native deciduous forests are significant.
In the Sundarbans, mangrove protection, freshwater-salinity balance, coastal resilience and community livelihoods require integrated management.
19. Forest Cover and Tree Cover
Forest cover and tree cover are not identical statistical categories.
In the India State of Forest Report framework, forest cover generally refers to qualifying tree-canopy areas meeting the mapping criteria, irrespective of legal ownership.
Tree cover refers to smaller tree patches and trees outside the mapped forest-cover category, as defined by the reporting methodology.
Recorded forest area is a legal or administrative category and should not be confused with forest cover measured through remote sensing.
Exam trap: Forest cover, recorded forest area and tree cover should not be used interchangeably.
20. Regional Revision Table
| Region | Vegetation | Important concern |
|---|---|---|
| Darjeeling-Kalimpong | Subtropical, temperate and high-altitude vegetation | Landslides, fragmentation |
| Terai-Dooars | Moist forests, grasslands and riverine vegetation | Wildlife corridors, habitat fragmentation |
| Western plateau fringe | Sal-dominated deciduous forests | Fire, erosion, degradation |
| Gangetic plains | Modified vegetation, scattered trees and wetlands | Urbanization, habitat loss |
