Explanation
The renunciation of worldly life by Siddhartha Gautama is known in Buddhist tradition as Mahabhinishkramana, or the Great Departure.
Tradition places this event when Siddhartha was about 29 years old.
His decision to leave household life is connected with his confrontation with suffering and impermanence, traditionally represented by encounters with an old person, a sick person, a dead body and an ascetic.
He subsequently studied under teachers and practised severe austerities before rejecting extreme asceticism.
This eventually contributed to the Buddhist doctrine of the Middle Way.
The other terms have different meanings: Sambodhi refers to enlightenment; Dharmachakra Pravartana refers to the setting in motion of the Wheel of Dharma through Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath; and Mahaparinirvana refers to Buddha's final passing at Kushinagar.
These four terms are frequently tested together.
