Correct Answer
B. 1942B. 1942
Explanation
According to the source, the Cripps Mission came to India in 1942.
The source presents the Cripps proposals as an important stage in the constitutional developments preceding the formation of the Constituent Assembly.
It states that the Cripps proposals clearly provided that the Indian Constitution would be framed by an elected Constituent Assembly.
The proposals also spoke of granting Dominion Status to India.
According to the source, a federal arrangement was proposed in which British provinces and princely states would be included.
Provinces and princely states were to have the power to accept or reject the Constitution.
The source states that both the Muslim League and the Congress rejected the Cripps proposals, but for different reasons.
The Muslim League rejected them because the demand for a separate Pakistan was not accepted, while the Congress demanded complete independence whereas the proposals offered Dominion Status.
The source also attributes to Mahatma Gandhi the description of the Cripps proposal as a 'post-dated cheque.' For examination revision, remember the cluster: Cripps Mission—1942—elected Constituent Assembly—Dominion Status—rejected by Congress and Muslim League.
