How many Mahajanapadas are mentioned in the Anguttara Nikaya?
Correct Answer
B. 16B. 16
Explanation
The Buddhist text Anguttara Nikaya mentions sixteen major political entities known as the Mahajanapadas.
They were Anga, Magadha, Kasi, Kosala, Vajji, Malla, Chedi, Vatsa, Kuru, Panchala, Matsya, Surasena, Assaka or Ashmaka, Avanti, Gandhara and Kamboja.
They flourished broadly during the sixth century BCE, when northern India experienced major political, economic and social changes.
The term Mahajanapada literally indicates a large territorial state.
Earlier Vedic society had been organized largely around jana or tribal communities, but territorial states gradually became more important.
Not all sixteen had identical political systems.
Several developed monarchies, whereas entities such as Vajji and Malla are commonly described as gana-sanghas or oligarchic republics.
The period also witnessed increasing urbanization, iron technology, expanding agriculture, trade and the use of punch-marked coins.
These developments created the environment in which Buddhism and Jainism expanded.
For examinations, remember the basic association: Anguttara Nikaya—Buddhist text—sixteen Mahajanapadas.
