The Fundamental Duties were incorporated into the Constitution following the recommendations of the Swaran Singh Committee.
The committee was constituted in 1976 and recommended that citizens should have certain expressly stated constitutional duties.
Acting in this broader context, Parliament enacted the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976 and inserted Part IVA and Article 51A.
The original constitutional text adopted in 1950 contained Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles of State Policy but did not contain a separate chapter specifically enumerating Fundamental Duties.
