Explanation

The President of India is elected indirectly.
Citizens do not cast votes directly for presidential candidates.
Instead, the President is elected by an Electoral College constituted under Article 54.
The method of election is prescribed in Article 55 and uses proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote with voting by secret ballot.
The indirect system reflects the constitutional position of the President in India's parliamentary framework.
It also provides representation to both the Union and the States through their elected representatives.
This should be distinguished from Lok Sabha elections, in which eligible citizens directly elect their representatives.
Thus, the defining feature of the presidential election is that the voters in the election are members of a constitutionally specified Electoral College rather than the general electorate.
