Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, was born in the region corresponding to present-day Bihar.
Jain tradition associates his birthplace with Kundagrama or Kundalpur near Vaishali.
He was born into a Kshatriya family; his father is traditionally named Siddhartha and his mother Trishala.
Mahavira was originally known as Vardhamana.
At about the age of thirty, he renounced worldly life and became an ascetic.
After a prolonged period of severe spiritual discipline and meditation, Jain tradition holds that he attained Kevala Jnana, or perfect knowledge.
He subsequently preached a path centred on ethical and spiritual discipline.

महावीर जैन धर्म के 24वें तीर्थंकर माने जाते हैं और उनका जन्म वर्तमान बिहार क्षेत्र में हुआ था। जैन परंपरा में उनके जन्मस्थान को वैशाली के निकट कुंडग्राम अथवा कुंडलपुर से जोड़ा जाता है। उनका जन्म एक क्षत्रिय परिवार में हुआ था। उनके पिता का नाम परंपरागत रूप से सिद्धार्थ और माता का नाम त्रिशला बताया जाता है। महावीर का प्रारंभिक नाम वर्धमान था। लगभग 30 वर्ष की आयु में उन्होंने सांसारिक जीवन का त्याग किया और संन्यासी जीवन अपनाया। लंबे समय तक कठोर तप और साधना के बाद उन्हें जैन परंपरा में Kevala Jnana अर्थात पूर्ण ज्ञान की प्राप्ति मानी जाती है। जैन धर्म में पाँच प्रमुख व्रत विशेष रूप से महत्वपूर्ण हैं—अहिंसा, सत्य, अस्तेय, अपरिग्रह और ब्रह्मचर्य। महावीर को जैन परंपरा का 24वाँ तीर्थंकर माना जाता है; प्रथम तीर्थंकर ऋषभनाथ तथा 23वें तीर्थंकर पार्श्वनाथ थे। परीक्षा में Mahavira के जन्मस्थान से संबंधित राज्य पूछा जाए तो उत्तर बिहार होगा।
