Explanation

The term ‘Jina’ means ‘the conqueror’ or ‘victor’.
It is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘ji’, meaning ‘to conquer’.
In Jain philosophy, however, the conquest is not military or political.
It refers to the spiritual conquest of passions, attachments, desires and karmic bondage through self-discipline and right conduct.
From the word ‘Jina’ comes the term ‘Jain’, referring to a follower of the path taught by the Jinas.
A Tirthankara is a perfected spiritual teacher who has conquered worldly attachments and shows others the path toward liberation.
Jain philosophy places great importance on the Three Jewels or Triratna: Samyak Darshana (right faith or perception), Samyak Jnana (right knowledge) and Samyak Charitra (right conduct).
These, together with strict ethical discipline, are connected with progress toward liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, is therefore described as a Jina because of spiritual conquest over worldly passions and bondage.
Hence ‘the conqueror’ is the correct answer.
