During a National Emergency, by how much can Parliament extend the term of the Lok Sabha at a time?
Correct Answer
C. One yearC.
Explanation
Article 83(2) permits Parliament to extend the term of the Lok Sabha during a Proclamation of Emergency by law for a period not exceeding one year at a time.
Such an extension cannot continue beyond six months after the Emergency ceases to operate.
The normal duration of the Lok Sabha is five years from the date appointed for its first meeting, unless dissolved earlier.
The emergency extension is an exceptional constitutional arrangement intended to maintain legislative continuity during extraordinary circumstances.
The important distinction is between the maximum extension of one year at a time and the six-month limit following the end of the Emergency.
