Science — Force & Newton's Laws

Force / बल

A force is a push or pull that can change or tend to change the state of motion, direction, or shape of an object.

SI unit:

Newton (N)

Effects of Force

Force can:

  1. Start a stationary object moving.
  2. Stop a moving object.
  3. Change speed.
  4. Change direction.
  5. Change shape.

Balanced Forces

When net force is zero:

Resultant Force = 0

These are balanced forces.

Unbalanced Force

If resultant force is non-zero, the object's state of motion can change.

Newton's First Law

An object remains at rest or continues moving with uniform velocity in a straight line unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force.

This is also called the Law of Inertia.

Inertia /

Inertia is the tendency of a body to resist a change in its state of rest or motion.

Mass is a measure of inertia.

Greater mass → greater inertia

Newton's Second Law

Force is related to the rate of change of momentum.

For constant mass:

F = ma

where:

F = force
m = mass
a = acceleration

Momentum /

Momentum = Mass × Velocity

p = mv

SI unit:

kg·m/s

Momentum is a vector quantity.

Newton's Third Law

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Important:

Action and reaction act on different bodies.

Examples

Walking

Your foot pushes the ground backward; the ground exerts a forward force on you.

Gun Recoil

Bullet moves forward while gun recoils backward.

Rocket

Gases are expelled backward; rocket accelerates forward.

Swimming

Swimmer pushes water backward; water pushes swimmer forward.
