Global Methane Status Report 2025 |
Why in News? |
The Global Methane Status Report 2025 brought renewed attention to methane emissions and the need for faster mitigation. The report assesses global progress toward methane-reduction objectives and identifies major sectors where further action is required.
Who Produces the Report? |
The report is produced by the United Nations Environment Programme and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition. It tracks progress connected with international efforts to reduce anthropogenic methane emissions.
Why Methane Matters |
Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas. Although it remains in the atmosphere for a shorter period than carbon dioxide, its warming effect per unit mass over shorter assessment periods is considerably stronger. Rapid methane reduction can therefore contribute significantly to slowing near-term warming.
Major Sources |
Important anthropogenic sources include fossil-fuel production and distribution, livestock and manure, rice cultivation, landfills, wastewater and biomass burning. Crop-residue burning is particularly relevant in discussions concerning seasonal air pollution and emissions in parts of India.
Global Methane Pledge |
The Global Methane Pledge was launched at COP26 with the collective objective of reducing global anthropogenic methane emissions by at least 30 percent from 2020 levels by 2030. It is a voluntary international initiative rather than a legally binding treaty target for every country.
