Vedic Period / वैदिक काल
The Vedic Period is one of the most important chapters of Ancient Indian History for competitive examinations. It is broadly studied in two phases: the Rig Vedic Period and the Later Vedic Period.

Rig Vedic Period (1500-1000 BC) / ऋग्वैदिक काल

Sapta Sindhawa / सप्त सिंधव
The early area of Aryan settlement was known as Sapta Sindhawa or the Land of Seven Rivers, comprising the Indus, its five tributaries and the Saraswati.

The Battle of Ten Kings was fought against Sudas, the Bharata king of the Tritsus, on the bank of the Parushni River. Sudas emerged victorious.

Political Organisation / राजनीतिक व्यवस्था
The Rig Vedic political structure was largely tribal. The tribe was known as Jana and its ruler was called Rajan. Although kingship was generally hereditary, the source mentions traces of election through the tribal assembly called Samiti.

Important assemblies mentioned in the Rigveda included Sabha, Samiti, Vidatha and Gana. A village was headed by the Gramani. The king was assisted by officials such as Purohita, Senani and Gramani.

Society / समाज
Loyalty was primarily towards the Jana because a fully developed territorial kingdom had not yet emerged. The source notes that women enjoyed freedom and respect during this phase.

Economy / अर्थव्यवस्था
Pastoralism was the major occupation and agriculture was secondary. There was no regular revenue system; voluntary tribute called Bali and booty from battles helped maintain the political establishment.
पशुपालन प्रमुख व्यवसाय था और कृषि द्वितीयक थी। नियमित राजस्व व्यवस्था नहीं थी। Bali नामक स्वैच्छिक भेंट तथा युद्ध से प्राप्त संपत्ति महत्वपूर्ण थी।
The cow served as an important unit of exchange. Nishka, Krishnal and Satmana are mentioned in the source. Yava or barley was the staple crop.
