Who described the Cripps proposal as a 'post-dated cheque' according to the source?
Correct Answer
C. Mahatma GandhiC.
Explanation
According to the source, Mahatma Gandhi described the Cripps proposal as a 'post-dated cheque.' The Cripps Mission came to India in 1942 and offered a constitutional scheme that included Dominion Status for India.
The source states that the proposal clearly envisaged an elected Constituent Assembly for framing the Indian Constitution.
It also proposed a federal arrangement involving British provinces and princely states and provided that provinces and princely states could accept or reject the Constitution.
Nevertheless, both the Congress and Muslim League rejected the proposal.
According to the source, Congress demanded complete independence rather than the Dominion Status offered by the proposal.
The Muslim League rejected it because the demand for a separate Pakistan was not accepted.
The 'post-dated cheque' description is therefore one of several facts that should be connected with the Cripps Mission for examination purposes.
Students should also distinguish it from quotations about other constitutional measures.
For example, the source attributes the 'car with brakes but no engine' description of the Government of India Act, 1935 to Jawaharlal Nehru.
For the Cripps proposal, the source-based answer is Mahatma Gandhi.
