Article 38 was expanded through the 44th Constitutional Amendment.
Article 38 is a major socio-economic Directive Principle and requires the State to promote the welfare of the people by securing a social order informed by social, economic and political justice.
The amendment strengthened the constitutional emphasis on reducing inequalities.
Article 38 now also directs the State to endeavour to minimise inequalities in income and to eliminate inequalities in status, facilities and opportunities, not merely among individuals but also among groups of people residing in different areas or engaged in different vocations.
