Agriculture is one of the most important topics in the geography and economy of West Bengal. Questions frequently examine rice cultivation, jute-growing regions, tea plantations, cropping seasons, soil requirements, irrigation, agricultural diversification and the challenges faced by farmers.

This chapter provides detailed, exam-oriented notes in English, Bengali and Hindi, with explanations, comparisons, examples and revision points.

Part I — English Notes

1. Introduction to Agriculture in West Bengal

Agriculture is an important component of West Bengal's economy and rural society. The state has a high population density, fertile alluvial plains, a monsoon climate, an extensive river network and a long tradition of intensive farming.

Agricultural production varies considerably across the state because physical and economic conditions are not uniform.

For example:

  • The Gangetic plains support intensive cultivation of rice, jute, potatoes, wheat and vegetables.

  • The northern districts support rice, maize, tea, jute and horticultural crops.

  • The Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills support tea, horticulture and other crops suited to their elevation.

  • The western plateau fringe supports rice, pulses, oilseeds and other crops, often under greater moisture constraints.

  • The coastal districts support rice cultivation, fisheries and selected salt-tolerant agricultural activities.

Major characteristics

  1. Rice is the dominant food crop.

  2. Jute is a historically important commercial fibre crop.

  3. Tea is an internationally recognised plantation crop.

  4. Potato is an important commercial and food crop.

  5. Multiple cropping is common where irrigation and other inputs are available.

  6. Small and fragmented landholdings are significant features of the agricultural landscape.

  7. Agricultural performance is strongly influenced by the southwest monsoon.

  8. Irrigation, drainage, soil health and market access affect productivity.

Important examination point: Agriculture in West Bengal cannot be explained by rainfall alone. Soil, irrigation, topography, technology, transport, markets and farm size are also important.

2. Factors Affecting Agriculture

2.1 Climate

West Bengal experiences a tropical monsoon climate over much of its territory, with cooler conditions in the Himalayan hills.

The southwest monsoon generally provides the largest share of annual rainfall.

High rainfall favours paddy cultivation, jute and many horticultural crops. However, excessive rainfall can produce floods and waterlogging, while delayed or deficient rainfall may damage crops.

Winter conditions are favourable for crops such as wheat, mustard, potato and various vegetables, provided adequate moisture is available.

2.2 Soil

The major agricultural soil groups include:

Alluvial soils: Found widely in the Gangetic plains. These support rice, jute, wheat, potatoes, vegetables and many other crops.

Terai and foothill soils: Found in northern West Bengal. Their agricultural suitability depends on texture, drainage and local moisture conditions.

Red and lateritic soils: Found across parts of Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur and adjoining western areas. These soils often require careful water and nutrient management.

Coastal saline soils: Found in parts of the coastal and Sundarbans region. Salinity and drainage can restrict crop selection and productivity.

Mountain soils: Found in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills. Their suitability varies with altitude, slope, soil depth and erosion risk.

2.3 Relief and drainage

Flat plains generally favour extensive cultivation, irrigation networks and agricultural mechanisation.

Steep slopes restrict large-scale mechanisation and increase erosion risks.

Low-lying floodplains may be fertile but are vulnerable to seasonal flooding and prolonged waterlogging.

2.4 Human and economic factors

Agricultural development also depends on access to credit, seeds, fertilisers, machinery, irrigation, storage, roads, agricultural extension services and markets.

Farmers may choose crops based not only on environmental suitability but also on profitability, labour requirements, household consumption and market demand.

3. Major Food Crops

3.1 Rice

Rice is the principal food crop of West Bengal and occupies a central position in the state's agricultural economy.

Scientific name: Oryza sativa

Rice cultivation is widespread because much of the state has suitable temperatures, monsoon rainfall and fertile plains.

Rice can be cultivated in different seasons.

Three important rice seasons

Aus rice

Aus is traditionally associated with the pre-monsoon and early monsoon growing period. Its sowing and harvesting dates vary with location and cultivation practices.

Aman rice

Aman is primarily associated with the southwest monsoon season. It is traditionally transplanted or established during the rainy period and harvested after the monsoon.

Aman is especially important in the state's seasonal rice-growing system.

Boro rice

Boro is generally grown during the dry winter-to-summer period, with irrigation playing a major role in its cultivation.

Boro cultivation demonstrates how irrigation can reduce dependence on rainfall during the growing season.

Importance of rice

Rice is a staple food, a major source of rural employment and a central component of the agricultural economy.

Its cultivation is also closely connected with irrigation infrastructure, agricultural mechanisation, fertiliser use, seed improvement and water management.

Major problems in rice cultivation

  • Flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

  • Rainfall variability.

  • Irrigation costs during the Boro season.

  • Soil nutrient depletion under poorly managed intensive cultivation.

  • Pest and disease outbreaks.

  • Labour and input costs.

4. Wheat

Scientific name: Triticum aestivum is the principal bread wheat species.

Wheat is generally cultivated as a Rabi crop.

It grows best under relatively cool conditions during vegetative growth and comparatively dry conditions around ripening and harvest.

Wheat cultivation occurs in parts of the plains where suitable winter conditions and moisture are available.

Unlike rice, wheat generally does not require standing water.

5. Maize

Scientific name: Zea mays

Maize is cultivated in different parts of West Bengal, including northern and selected other districts.

Its uses include human food, livestock feed and industrial raw material.

Maize cultivation requires suitable temperature, soil fertility and drainage.

Waterlogging can seriously affect maize growth.

6. Pulses

Pulses are important sources of plant protein and contribute to crop diversification.

Important pulses include lentil, gram, pea, mung bean, black gram and other locally suitable varieties.

Many pulses belong to the family Fabaceae.

Through symbiotic relationships with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, several pulse crops can contribute to biological nitrogen fixation.

However, the extent of soil fertility improvement depends on the crop, management and the removal or incorporation of crop residues.

Importance

Pulses improve dietary diversity, offer rotation opportunities and may reduce the need for nitrogen fertiliser in suitable cropping systems.

7. Major Commercial Crops

7.1 Jute

Rice-An Integral Part Of Bengali Diet and Life - Pragati Rice

Jute is one of the most important traditional commercial crops of West Bengal.

It is a natural bast fibre obtained from the stem of the jute plant.

Two important cultivated species are Corchorus capsularis and Corchorus olitorius.

Conditions for jute cultivation

Jute generally requires warm, humid conditions, sufficient rainfall and fertile soils.

The alluvial plains of West Bengal provide favourable conditions for cultivation.

Important jute-growing areas include parts of Nadia, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Cooch Behar and other suitable districts.

Retting

Retting is the process through which the fibrous material is separated from the stem using microbial decomposition under suitable conditions.

The quality of water and retting practices affect fibre quality.

Uses

Jute is used to manufacture sacks, bags, ropes, packaging materials, carpets, geotextiles and other products.

Examination point: Jute cultivation and jute manufacturing are related but different activities. Cultivation requires suitable farmland, while manufacturing depends on industrial infrastructure, labour, transport and markets.

7.2 Tea

Happy Valley Tea Estate Darjeeling West Bengal Timings, Tour

Tea is a major plantation crop associated with northern West Bengal.

Scientific name: Camellia sinensis

Darjeeling tea has international recognition for its distinctive qualities.

Major tea-growing regions

Darjeeling hills: Famous for high-quality tea produced under specific geographical and climatic conditions.

Dooars: An important tea-growing belt across the northern plains and foothill landscape.

Terai: Another important tea-producing region in North Bengal.

Climatic conditions

Tea cultivation generally favours humid conditions, adequate rainfall, well-drained soils and suitable temperatures.

In hill regions, slope, elevation, cloud cover and microclimate influence growing conditions.

Tea plantations require careful soil and water management because steep slopes may be vulnerable to erosion.

Darjeeling tea and geographical indication

Darjeeling tea is a well-known example of a Geographical Indication (GI) product.

A GI identifies goods whose qualities, reputation or characteristics are essentially attributable to a particular geographical origin.

Important: Not all tea grown in West Bengal qualifies as Darjeeling tea. The geographical origin and applicable production standards matter.

7.3 Potato

Measuring Social Impact: Approaches, Challenges, and Best Practices

Potato is an important food and commercial crop in West Bengal.

Scientific name: Solanum tuberosum

It is generally cultivated during the cooler Rabi season.

Major potato-growing areas include Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman and other suitable districts.

Potatoes require good seed quality, suitable soil moisture, balanced nutrients and effective disease management.

Cold storage is particularly important because potatoes are perishable and production is seasonal.

7.4 Oilseeds

Important oilseed crops include mustard, sesame, groundnut and other suitable crops.

Mustard is particularly associated with the winter Rabi season.

Oilseeds are important for edible oil production and crop diversification.

7.5 Sugarcane

Scientific name: Saccharum officinarum

Sugarcane is cultivated in selected suitable areas of West Bengal.

It requires a relatively long growing period, warm conditions and adequate water.

Its economic significance is more localised than that of rice, jute or tea in the state.

8. Cropping Seasons in West Bengal

India's agricultural calendar is commonly divided into Kharif, Rabi and Zaid seasons.

Kharif season

Kharif crops are generally associated with the southwest monsoon.

Examples include Aman rice, jute and many monsoon-grown crops.

Rabi season

Rabi crops are generally cultivated during the cooler winter period.

Examples include wheat, mustard, potato, lentil and several vegetables.

Zaid season

Zaid refers to the relatively short summer cropping period between the major Rabi and Kharif seasons.

Suitable vegetables, fodder crops and other short-duration crops may be grown where irrigation is available.

Important distinction: Aus, Aman and Boro are rice-season classifications. Kharif, Rabi and Zaid are broader agricultural season classifications.

9. Irrigation in West Bengal

Irrigation is the artificial application of water to agricultural land to meet crop requirements.

It is particularly important when rainfall is inadequate, unreliable or poorly distributed.

Major sources

Canal irrigation: Water is conveyed from rivers, reservoirs or barrages through canal systems.

Tubewell irrigation: Groundwater is extracted through wells fitted with pumps.

Tank and pond irrigation: Stored surface water is used for agriculture, particularly in suitable local areas.

River-lift irrigation: Water is pumped from rivers or other surface-water bodies.

Micro-irrigation: Drip and sprinkler systems may be used for suitable crops, depending on local conditions and costs.

Damodar Valley Project

The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) was established in 1948.

The Damodar Valley system is associated with multipurpose water-resource development, including flood moderation, irrigation and power generation.

Its infrastructure includes dams, barrages and canal networks.

The Durgapur Barrage is an important component of the irrigation network in the Damodar basin.

Mayurakshi Project

The Mayurakshi irrigation system is associated with the Massanjore Dam and downstream water-distribution infrastructure.

It supports irrigation in parts of the Mayurakshi basin, including agricultural areas of Birbhum and neighbouring regions.

Teesta irrigation system

The Teesta irrigation system is important for agricultural water management in northern West Bengal.

Its effectiveness depends on water availability, infrastructure and operational conditions.

Problems of irrigation

  1. Groundwater depletion in heavily extracted areas.

  2. High pumping and energy costs.

  3. Canal maintenance problems.

  4. Unequal distribution of irrigation water.

  5. Waterlogging where drainage is inadequate.

  6. Soil salinity problems in vulnerable areas.

Irrigation improves production potential, but poorly managed irrigation may also create environmental problems.

10. Agricultural Regions of West Bengal

The state can be understood through several broad agricultural regions.

10.1 North Bengal plains

These include important agricultural areas of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and adjoining northern districts.

Major activities include rice cultivation, jute, maize, vegetables and tea in suitable belts.

High rainfall supports cultivation but flooding and waterlogging can be significant constraints.

10.2 Gangetic alluvial plains

These include large parts of the central and southern plains.

Important crops include rice, jute, potatoes, wheat, mustard, pulses and vegetables.

Fertile alluvial soils, irrigation and proximity to markets support intensive agriculture.

10.3 Western plateau fringe

Parts of Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur and neighbouring western districts fall within this broad region.

Red and lateritic soils, variable water availability and undulating relief influence agriculture.

Rice, pulses, oilseeds and other crops are grown according to local soil and moisture conditions.

10.4 Himalayan hill region

The Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills support tea, horticulture and other crops suited to local elevations.

Steep slopes, soil erosion and limited cultivable land are major constraints.

10.5 Coastal and Sundarbans region

Parts of South 24 Parganas and adjoining coastal areas experience salinity, tidal influences, cyclones and drainage problems.

Rice cultivation remains important in suitable agricultural areas, alongside fisheries and other livelihoods.

Salt-tolerant varieties, drainage management and rainwater storage can be particularly useful.

11. Horticulture and Agricultural Diversification

Horticulture includes the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers and other garden crops.

West Bengal produces a wide variety of vegetables and fruits, including mango, banana, pineapple and other regionally suitable crops.

Horticulture can provide higher returns per unit area under favourable conditions, but it also involves risks.

Challenges

  • Perishability of produce.

  • Price fluctuations.

  • Need for cold-chain infrastructure.

  • Pest and disease management.

  • Transport delays.

  • Post-harvest losses.

Agricultural diversification refers to expanding beyond dependence on a narrow range of crops or activities.

It may include pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, fruits, flowers, livestock, fisheries and allied activities.

Diversification can help spread risks, although profitability depends on local markets and infrastructure.

12. Major Agricultural Problems

12.1 Small and fragmented holdings

Small holdings may make large-scale mechanisation, irrigation investment and efficient marketing difficult.

Cooperative approaches and shared machinery services can sometimes reduce these constraints.

12.2 Floods

Flooding affects parts of the Gangetic plains, North Bengal and low-lying coastal areas.

Floods can damage crops, delay sowing and increase post-harvest losses.

12.3 Drought and rainfall variability

Western districts may experience moisture stress, especially where irrigation is limited.

12.4 Soil degradation

Excessive nutrient removal, erosion, poor drainage and unsuitable farming practices can reduce soil quality.

12.5 Coastal salinity

Salinity can restrict crop growth by reducing plants' ability to absorb water and by creating ionic stress.

12.6 Marketing and storage

Farmers may face fluctuating prices, limited storage facilities, transport costs and market-access problems.

13. Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture seeks to maintain agricultural productivity while conserving soil, water and biodiversity.

Important approaches include:

  • Crop rotation and suitable intercropping.

  • Balanced nutrient management.

  • Soil testing.

  • Efficient irrigation.

  • Rainwater harvesting.

  • Integrated pest management.

  • Conservation of beneficial organisms.

  • Use of locally appropriate crop varieties.

  • Better drainage and salinity management.

  • Reduction of avoidable post-harvest losses.

Climate-resilient agriculture

Climate-resilient agriculture aims to reduce vulnerability to droughts, floods, heat stress, cyclones and other climatic hazards.

Possible strategies include flood-tolerant rice varieties in flood-prone areas, drought-tolerant varieties in moisture-stressed areas and salt-tolerant crops in suitable coastal areas.

No single crop variety or technique is suitable for every district.
