Dariya Bahadur Island is a small rocky island near Malpe Beach in Udupi district, Karnataka, on India's western coast. It is also known as Bhadragada Island or Lighthouse Island.
Why in News?
In November 2025, police reportedly registered a case after individuals allegedly entered the restricted island without authorisation.
Geographical Location
Malpe is a coastal settlement near Udupi on the Arabian Sea. The offshore islands in this area are associated with Karnataka's coastal geography and maritime history. Dariya Bahadur Island should not be confused with St Mary's Islands, another well-known group near Malpe.
Historical Significance
The island is associated with Dariya Bahadurgarh Fort, traditionally linked to Basavappa Nayaka of Bidanur or Keladi. The fort reflects the historical importance of coastal defence and control of maritime approaches.
Built Heritage
Descriptions of the island mention a fort, a lighthouse and other older structures. Claims about buried royal treasure belong to local tradition and should not be presented as established archaeological fact.
Why Coastal Forts Were Built
Coastal forts helped rulers observe sea approaches, defend ports, protect trading routes and respond to maritime threats. The western coast of India has many such historical structures because of its long association with Indian Ocean trade.

भौगोलिक स्थिति
मालपे, अरब सागर के तट पर उडुपी के निकट स्थित तटीय क्षेत्र है। इसके अपतटीय द्वीप कर्नाटक के तटीय भूगोल और समुद्री इतिहास से जुड़े हैं। दरिया बहादुर द्वीप को मालपे के निकट स्थित प्रसिद्ध सेंट मैरी द्वीपसमूह के साथ भ्रमित नहीं करना चाहिए।
ऐतिहासिक महत्व
यह द्वीप दरिया बहादुरगढ़ किले से संबंधित है। परंपरागत रूप से इस किले का संबंध बिदनूर अथवा केलाड़ी के बसवप्पा नायक से जोड़ा जाता है। यह किला तटीय रक्षा और समुद्री मार्गों पर नियंत्रण के ऐतिहासिक महत्व को दर्शाता है।
निर्मित विरासत
द्वीप के विवरणों में किला, प्रकाशस्तंभ और अन्य पुरानी संरचनाओं का उल्लेख मिलता है। राजकीय खजाना दबाए जाने की कहानियाँ स्थानीय परंपराओं का हिस्सा हैं; इन्हें स्थापित पुरातात्त्विक तथ्य नहीं मानना चाहिए।
तटीय किलों का उद्देश्य
तटीय किले समुद्री मार्गों की निगरानी, बंदरगाहों की रक्षा, व्यापारिक मार्गों की सुरक्षा और समुद्री खतरों का सामना करने में सहायता करते थे। हिंद महासागर के व्यापार से लंबे संबंध के कारण भारत के पश्चिमी तट पर ऐसी अनेक ऐतिहासिक संरचनाएँ मौजूद हैं।
