Why in News?

On 12 October 2026, the Indian Navy commissioned INS Mangrol (P82), the third Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. The ceremony was presided over by Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.

The warship was indigenously designed and constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi. According to the Ministry of Defence, it incorporates more than 80% indigenous content. Its commissioning represents an important development in India's coastal defence preparedness and indigenous naval shipbuilding capabilities.

What Is INS Mangrol?

INS Mangrol is a specialised Indian Navy warship designed for anti-submarine warfare and other maritime security operations in coastal and shallow waters.

Its pennant number is P82. It belongs to the Mahe class of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, commonly abbreviated ASW-SWC.

Unlike larger warships intended for a wide range of ocean-going operations, shallow-water anti-submarine vessels are designed with particular attention to operations near coastlines, ports and other relatively confined maritime environments.

Commissioning Ceremony

The commissioning ceremony took place at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on 12 October 2026. Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, presided over the event.

Senior officers of the defence forces, representatives of the Ministry of Defence, Cochin Shipyard Limited and industry partners attended the ceremony.

The event formally marked the ship's entry into commissioned naval service. Commissioning should be distinguished from launching or delivery, which are different stages in a warship's development and induction.

Who Built INS Mangrol?

INS Mangrol was designed and constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited, located in Kochi, Kerala.

Cochin Shipyard Limited is an important Indian shipbuilding and ship-repair enterprise. Its work includes the construction of sophisticated vessels for maritime applications.

The INS Mangrol project demonstrates domestic capabilities in ship design, construction and the integration of naval equipment and systems.

What Is the Mahe Class?

The Mahe class comprises specialised shallow-water anti-submarine warfare vessels developed for the Indian Navy.

INS Mangrol is the third vessel of this class, according to the official commissioning announcement.

The class is intended to strengthen the Navy's ability to detect and respond to underwater threats in coastal environments where water depth, seabed conditions and other factors can complicate submarine detection.

What Is Anti-Submarine Warfare?

Anti-Submarine Warfare, abbreviated ASW, refers to military operations intended to detect, track, deter or counter hostile submarines.

Submarines can pose threats to naval vessels, commercial shipping, maritime infrastructure and strategic sea routes.

Anti-submarine warfare can involve specialised ships, aircraft, helicopters, sensors, underwater acoustic systems and weapons. Effective operations require the integration of information from multiple sources.

Why Are Submarines Difficult to Detect?

Submarines operate beneath the sea surface, where ordinary visual observation is often ineffective.

Underwater detection can be affected by water temperature, salinity, seabed conditions, ambient noise and the acoustic characteristics of the submarine.

Coastal waters can be especially challenging because of shipping activity, variable depths and complex underwater conditions.

What Are Shallow Waters?

Shallow waters are maritime areas where the sea depth is relatively limited compared with deep-ocean environments.

These areas can include coastal approaches, harbours and waters near islands or continental coastlines.

Operating in such environments requires careful navigation, appropriate vessel design and equipment suited to the local underwater conditions.

What Is the Littoral Environment?

The littoral environment refers broadly to coastal areas where land and sea interact.

For naval operations, littoral waters can include coastal approaches, shallow seas and maritime zones close to shore.

These environments may involve dense civilian traffic, underwater obstacles, changing depths and complex acoustic conditions.

Operational Roles of INS Mangrol

The Ministry of Defence identified four principal operational areas for INS Mangrol: anti-submarine warfare, underwater surveillance, low-intensity maritime operations and mine warfare-related tasks.

These roles contribute to coastal defence and maritime situational awareness.

The vessel's specialised equipment and manoeuvrability are intended to support operations in confined and shallow maritime areas.

Underwater Surveillance

Underwater surveillance involves observing and assessing activities and conditions beneath the sea surface.

It may involve sonar and other specialised systems capable of detecting underwater objects or movements.

Such surveillance is important for identifying possible threats and maintaining awareness of maritime activity around sensitive coastal locations.

What Is Sonar?

Sonar stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging. It uses sound to detect, locate or study objects underwater.

Active sonar transmits sound signals and analyses returning echoes. Passive sonar listens for sounds generated by underwater sources.

Sonar performance depends on environmental conditions and system characteristics. It is particularly important in submarine detection because sound propagates through water.

Advanced Sensors and Weapon Systems

According to the official announcement, INS Mangrol is equipped with advanced sensors, sonar and weapon systems.

These systems support the detection, tracking and countering of underwater threats.

The official commissioning release does not identify every sensor model, weapon designation or performance parameter. Such details should not be invented or presented as confirmed specifications.

What Are Low-Intensity Maritime Operations?

Low-Intensity Maritime Operations, abbreviated LIMO, refer broadly to naval activities conducted below the threshold of major naval combat.

Depending on the mission, such activities may involve surveillance, security support and responses to limited maritime threats.

INS Mangrol's stated capability for these operations increases its usefulness beyond specialised anti-submarine missions.

What Is Mine Warfare?

Naval mines are explosive devices intended to threaten vessels operating in maritime areas.

Mine warfare encompasses activities associated with the use, detection and management of naval mines.

The Ministry of Defence stated that INS Mangrol can undertake mine warfare-related tasks. The release does not provide a detailed inventory of its mine warfare equipment.

Propulsion System

INS Mangrol is powered by three diesel engine-driven waterjet propulsion units.

The Ministry of Defence highlighted that this propulsion arrangement provides high manoeuvrability and rapid response.

These characteristics are especially useful when operating in shallow and confined waters where vessels may need to change direction quickly.

What Is Waterjet Propulsion?

Waterjet propulsion moves a vessel by drawing water into a propulsion system and expelling it at high velocity.

The reaction force generated by the expelled water propels the vessel forward.

Waterjet systems can offer useful manoeuvring characteristics in certain vessel designs. Their performance depends on the ship's engineering and operating conditions.

Why Is Manoeuvrability Important?

Manoeuvrability is the ability of a vessel to change direction, speed or position effectively.

In confined maritime areas, a vessel may need to respond rapidly to navigational obstacles, traffic or operational requirements.

The waterjet propulsion arrangement of INS Mangrol is intended to improve its responsiveness in such environments.

More Than 80% Indigenous Content

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that INS Mangrol contains more than 80% indigenous content.

This reflects the participation of Indian shipbuilding enterprises, equipment manufacturers and other industrial partners.

The percentage should not be interpreted as proof that every individual component, material or technology used in the ship originated in India.

What Is Defence Indigenisation?

Defence indigenisation involves developing and manufacturing defence equipment, systems and components within the country.

It aims to strengthen domestic technological capabilities, improve supply-chain resilience and reduce dependence on external suppliers.

Indigenous naval shipbuilding is particularly important because warships require the integration of propulsion, electrical, mechanical, electronic and combat-related systems.

Role of MSMEs

The Ministry of Defence highlighted the contribution of Indian defence industries and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises to the development of indigenous naval capabilities.

MSMEs may participate in supply chains through the production of specialised components, engineering services and supporting equipment.

The official release does not provide the number of MSMEs involved specifically in INS Mangrol or the value of their contracts.

Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India

Atmanirbhar Bharat promotes stronger domestic capabilities and greater resilience in strategically important sectors.

Make in India seeks to encourage manufacturing, investment and industrial development within the country.

INS Mangrol demonstrates the application of these objectives to naval shipbuilding through domestic design, construction and industrial participation.

Origin of the Name Mangrol

INS Mangrol takes its name from Mangrol, a coastal town and prominent fishing harbour in Junagadh district of Gujarat.

The naming reflects the Indian Navy's tradition of associating vessels with important geographical locations and preserving naval heritage.

This is an important geography-related fact for competitive examinations.

Legacy of the Earlier INS Mangrol

The new vessel carries forward the name of the earlier INS Mangrol (M85), which served as a minesweeper in the Indian Navy.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the earlier vessel remained in service until April 2004.

The older minesweeper and the newly commissioned INS Mangrol (P82) are different ships with different designations.

What Is a Minesweeper?

A minesweeper is a naval vessel designed to support operations involving the detection or clearance of naval mines.

Such vessels contribute to keeping important sea routes and maritime approaches safer for navigation.

The earlier INS Mangrol was a minesweeper, whereas the new INS Mangrol is classified as an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft.

Importance of Coastal Security

India has an extensive coastline, important ports, coastal economic activity and maritime infrastructure.

Coastal security requires the coordination of naval surveillance, maritime law enforcement, intelligence and other security arrangements.

Specialised shallow-water vessels can contribute to protecting coastal approaches and improving responses to underwater threats.

What Is Maritime Domain Awareness?

Maritime Domain Awareness refers to the effective understanding of activities and conditions in maritime areas that may affect security, safety or economic interests.

It can involve information from ships, aircraft, coastal monitoring systems, sensors and other sources.

The Ministry of Defence stated that INS Mangrol will contribute to improved maritime domain awareness.

Importance of the Indian Ocean Region

The Indian Ocean Region is strategically important because it contains major international shipping routes and connects several important economic regions.

India's maritime interests include the security of coastal areas, commercial shipping, ports and sea-based economic activities.

The commissioning of INS Mangrol contributes to India's broader efforts to strengthen maritime security and regional stability.

Difference Between Launching and Commissioning

Launching is a shipbuilding milestone associated with placing a vessel into the water.

Delivery generally refers to the formal handover of a vessel after relevant construction and acceptance processes.

Commissioning marks the formal induction of a ship into naval service. INS Mangrol was commissioned on 12 October 2026, which is the event reported in the official release.

Strategic Importance

The addition of a specialised anti-submarine warfare vessel strengthens the Indian Navy's ability to monitor and respond to underwater threats in coastal environments.

It also supports domestic shipbuilding expertise and the development of naval industrial supply chains.

Its effectiveness in service will depend on operational integration, trained personnel, maintenance and the performance of its systems under actual maritime conditions.
