3. What Is Khet Bachao Abhiyan?
Khet Bachao Abhiyan is a farmer-outreach and agricultural extension initiative intended to improve farming practices and conserve agricultural resources.
Rather than functioning as a direct cash-transfer programme, it primarily focuses on awareness, training, field demonstrations and coordination among agricultural institutions.
It brings scientific recommendations closer to farmers through local-level activities and discussions.
The campaign combines environmental sustainability with the practical goal of reducing unnecessary agricultural expenditure and improving farm resilience.
4. Why Was the Rabi Season Selected?
India's Rabi cropping season generally begins after the monsoon and extends through the cooler months.
Wheat, mustard, gram, barley and several other crops are important Rabi crops in different regions.
October and November are particularly important for preparing fields, managing residues from preceding crops and making decisions about fertilisers, irrigation and sowing.
Providing agricultural guidance during this period can help farmers make timely decisions before or during cultivation.
5. Meaning of Sustainable Agriculture
Sustainable agriculture aims to maintain productive farming while protecting the natural resources on which agriculture depends.
It considers soil fertility, water availability, biodiversity, input efficiency, environmental impacts and the economic needs of farming households.
Sustainability does not mean applying a single farming method everywhere. Different soils, crops, climates and farm sizes require different solutions.
The campaign therefore emphasises a combination of scientific advice, local conditions and resource conservation.
6. Soil Health: The Central Priority
Soil health refers to the soil's capacity to function as a living system that supports plants, organisms, water regulation and agricultural production.
Healthy soil generally requires suitable physical structure, biological activity, organic matter and balanced nutrient availability.
Repeated cultivation without appropriate nutrient management may contribute to soil degradation.
Excessive use of particular fertilisers can also create nutrient imbalances.
The campaign encourages farmers to understand soil conditions before deciding how agricultural inputs should be used.
7. Why Soil Testing Matters
Soil testing helps assess important soil characteristics and the availability of selected nutrients.
Results can support recommendations for fertiliser selection and application according to crop requirements.
Without appropriate testing, farmers may apply excessive quantities of some nutrients while neglecting deficiencies of others.
Soil-test-based decisions can improve input efficiency and may reduce avoidable costs.
However, the usefulness of testing depends on representative sampling, reliable laboratories and recommendations suited to local crops and conditions.
8. Balanced Fertiliser Application
Plants require essential nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, commonly abbreviated N, P and K.
They also require other nutrients in varying quantities.
Balanced fertilisation means supplying nutrients according to crop needs and soil conditions rather than applying the same quantities to every field.
Overapplication may waste money and contribute to environmental problems, while underapplication may reduce productivity.
The campaign promotes judicious use of fertilisers and other inputs based on soil testing.
9. What Is Integrated Nutrient Management?
Integrated Nutrient Management combines appropriate nutrient sources and scientific management practices to maintain soil fertility and crop productivity.
Depending on local conditions, it may involve mineral fertilisers, organic manures, compost, crop residues and biological inputs.
The objective is to supply nutrients efficiently while supporting long-term soil quality.
Recommendations must account for the nutrient composition and suitability of each input.
The campaign's emphasis on balanced fertilisation and biological products is relevant to this broader approach.
10. Crop Diversification
Crop diversification means growing a wider range of crops rather than relying excessively on a single crop or narrow cropping pattern.
It may help distribute production risks, create new income opportunities and improve resource management.
The campaign encourages diversification through oilseed, pulse and horticulture-related initiatives.
Suitable diversification depends on irrigation availability, soil conditions, local demand, market access and agronomic suitability.
It should not be assumed that every farmer can immediately replace existing crops without economic or logistical challenges.
11. Importance of Pulses and Oilseeds
Pulses are important sources of dietary protein and contribute to India's food and nutritional security.
Many pulse crops can contribute to nitrogen fixation through biological relationships with microorganisms under suitable conditions.
Oilseeds are important for edible oil production and agricultural diversification.
Encouraging locally suitable pulses and oilseeds may support diversification and reduce dependence on a limited range of crops.
Productivity, market prices and input requirements remain important considerations for farmers.
12. Horticulture and Diversified Farming
Horticulture includes the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers and other specialised crops.
It can provide income opportunities and support dietary diversity.
However, many horticultural products are perishable and require suitable storage, transportation and marketing arrangements.
The campaign includes horticulture among the areas in which diversification is encouraged.
Successful adoption depends on technical advice and viable market linkages.
13. Rice Fallow Management
Rice fallows are fields that remain uncultivated for a period after the harvest of a rice crop.
Under suitable conditions, some of these fields may support an additional crop during the subsequent season.
Possible options depend on residual moisture, irrigation, soil type, seed availability and the local cropping calendar.
The campaign promotes effective use of fields left fallow after paddy harvesting.
This can potentially increase land-use efficiency without necessarily expanding the cultivated area.
14. Crop Residue Management
Crop residues include stalks, straw, leaves and other plant materials remaining after harvesting.
Improper disposal, including open-field burning, can contribute to air pollution and loss of potentially useful organic material.
Residues may be managed through suitable incorporation, mulching, collection or other locally appropriate methods.
The campaign includes awareness about proper crop residue management.
Effective adoption requires more than awareness alone: equipment availability, costs, labour and the short interval between cropping seasons can influence farmers' choices.
15. Water Conservation
Agriculture is a major user of freshwater resources.
Excessive groundwater extraction and inefficient irrigation can create long-term sustainability problems.
The campaign encourages water conservation, rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and efficient water use.
Water-management strategies should reflect local rainfall, aquifer conditions, crop requirements and infrastructure.
Improved water efficiency can help strengthen resilience during periods of irregular rainfall.
16. Natural Farming and Organic Inputs
The campaign includes awareness and training related to natural farming and the appropriate use of organic and biological agricultural products.
These approaches may seek to improve ecological processes and reduce reliance on certain purchased inputs.
However, natural farming, organic farming and balanced conventional fertilisation are not identical systems.
The suitability of each approach depends on soil conditions, crop needs, available biomass, transition costs and evidence of performance.
Farmers benefit from clear guidance that distinguishes the objectives and requirements of different practices.
17. Integrated Pest Management
Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, combines pest monitoring with suitable preventive, biological, cultural and, when justified, chemical control measures.
Its objective is to manage pest damage while avoiding unnecessary pesticide use.
IPM depends on correctly identifying pests and understanding crop conditions.
The campaign includes integrated pest management among its agricultural extension themes.
Training and demonstrations can help farmers select appropriate measures for local conditions.
18. Climate-Resilient Agriculture
Climate-resilient agriculture seeks to reduce the vulnerability of farming systems to weather variability and longer-term climate risks.
Farmers may face heat stress, irregular rainfall, drought, floods and changing pest patterns.
Possible responses include suitable crop varieties, improved soil management, water conservation, diversification and better weather-informed decisions.
The campaign includes climate-resilient and regenerative agricultural practices among its awareness themes.
There is no single intervention that eliminates all agricultural climate risks.
19. Farm Mechanisation
Farm mechanisation involves using appropriate machines and equipment for agricultural operations.
Mechanisation can improve timeliness and reduce labour requirements in certain tasks.
It can also support crop residue management, sowing and other field activities.
The campaign includes demonstrations of improved agricultural technologies.
For small and marginal farmers, equipment costs, repair services and access through hiring arrangements may affect adoption.
20. Farmer IDs and Digital Agriculture
The campaign includes support for creating Farmer IDs.
Digital farmer identification systems can help organise agricultural records and facilitate the administration of eligible services, subject to applicable rules.
Accurate records can improve coordination, but digital inclusion also requires accessible procedures, correction mechanisms and protection of personal information.
Creation of a Farmer ID should not be confused with automatic approval of every agricultural benefit.
21. Kisan Credit Card and Crop Insurance
The campaign will promote awareness about Kisan Credit Card coverage and the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
KCC facilitates access to institutional agricultural credit for eligible farmers under applicable lending conditions.
PMFBY provides crop insurance protection for specified risks under notified terms and conditions.
These schemes perform different functions: credit supports financing, while insurance addresses covered agricultural losses.
The campaign's role is to increase awareness and support appropriate outreach rather than guarantee automatic approval.
22. What Are Krishi Vigyan Kendras?
Krishi Vigyan Kendras, abbreviated KVKs, are agricultural science and extension institutions associated with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research system.
They help transfer agricultural knowledge through training, demonstrations and field-level activities.
KVKs connect scientific research with practical farming conditions.
The campaign envisages participation by KVKs and their technical personnel in local outreach activities.
23. Role of ICAR
ICAR stands for Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
It is a major institution in India's agricultural research and education system.
ICAR institutions work across disciplines such as crop science, soil science, agricultural engineering and other agricultural fields.
The campaign involves ICAR institutions and scientists in spreading appropriate agricultural knowledge.
The target outreach of approximately one crore participants is linked to mobilisation through ICAR and ATMA.
24. What Is ATMA?
ATMA stands for Agricultural Technology Management Agency.
It is associated with agricultural extension coordination at the district level.
ATMA helps connect farmers with information, training and agricultural support networks.
In the Rabi 2026 campaign, ATMA functionaries are expected to work with scientific and administrative institutions.
For examinations, students should remember both the abbreviation and its agricultural extension role.
25. Farmer Producer Organisations and Self-Help Groups
Farmer Producer Organisations, or FPOs, bring farmers together for collective economic activities and improved market participation.
Self-Help Groups, or SHGs, are community-based groups that often support savings, credit access and collective livelihood activities.
The campaign envisages participation by FPOs, cooperatives, SHGs and progressive farmers.
Such networks may help disseminate information and encourage participation in training programmes.
26. Nationwide Outreach Strategy
The campaign will organise farmers' conferences, Kisan Chaupals, training sessions and field demonstrations at state, district, block and Gram Panchayat levels.
Local-language materials, radio, Doordarshan, social media and other information, education and communication activities will support awareness.
Approximately 4,150 teams involving KVKs and ATMA are envisaged.
More than 12,000 scientists and ATMA personnel are expected to participate.
These are announced implementation targets and arrangements, not independently verified final achievements.
27. Expected Benefits
If implemented effectively, the campaign could improve farmer awareness of soil testing, appropriate fertiliser use and sustainable agricultural methods.
Better nutrient management may reduce unnecessary expenditure and support soil fertility.
Crop diversification and improved water management may strengthen resilience under suitable local conditions.
Training may also help farmers understand relevant credit and insurance services.
Actual outcomes will depend on adoption, access to inputs and equipment, follow-up support and local agricultural conditions.
28. Implementation Challenges
Reaching a large number of participants within a limited period creates logistical challenges.
Scientific recommendations must be adapted to different soils, climates, crops and farm sizes.
Farmers may face financial barriers to adopting equipment or changing cropping systems.
Awareness programmes are more effective when accompanied by accessible services, reliable advice and follow-up demonstrations.
Campaign participation figures should therefore be distinguished from measurable changes in farming practices and environmental outcomes.
