184 New Crop Varieties Released Across 25 Crops

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, associated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the Ministry of Rural Development, released 184 new varieties covering 25 different crops in New Delhi. The development is important for agriculture-related current affairs because the varieties cover cereals, cotton, oilseeds, fodder crops, pulses, sugarcane, jute and tobacco.

Who Developed the 184 Varieties?

The 184 varieties came from three major groups. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare developed 60 varieties. State and central agricultural universities contributed 62 varieties, while private seed companies contributed another 62 varieties. Thus, 60 + 62 + 62 gives the total of 184 varieties.

122 Cereal Varieties

The largest category consists of 122 cereal varieties. Crops listed under this category include rice, maize, sorghum, pearl millet, ragi, small millet and proso millet.

Oilseeds, Fodder and Pulses

The new varieties include 13 oilseed varieties, covering crops such as mustard, safflower, sesame, groundnut, gobhi sarson and castor. There are 11 fodder-crop varieties including oats, fodder sorghum, fodder maize and fodder pearl millet. Six pulse varieties were also released, including pigeon pea, green gram and black gram.

During the event, the minister announced that India became the world's largest rice producer in the 2024-25 crop year, producing 150.18 million tonnes compared with China's 145.28 million tonnes.
