Lycodon irwini |
English Notes
Lycodon irwini is a newly recognised species of wolf snake discovered on Great Nicobar Island, at the southern end of the Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal. Its identification is important because it demonstrates how island populations can remain scientifically unrecognised even when specimens have been observed for years.
Discovery and Naming
The species belongs to the Lycodon subcinctus group. It was named in honour of the late Australian wildlife conservationist Stephen Robert Irwin, popularly known as Steve Irwin. Researchers distinguished the Great Nicobar population from closely related snakes by examining its appearance and anatomical characteristics.
Physical Characteristics
The snake has a striking, nearly uniform glossy-black appearance. Many related wolf snakes have contrasting pale bands or patches. It is slender, primarily nocturnal and can approach 1.2 metres in length. Differences in the number and arrangement of belly and tail scales also help distinguish it from related species.
Why Great Nicobar Matters
Great Nicobar is India's southernmost major island and forms part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory. Its geographical isolation has encouraged the evolution of distinctive plant and animal populations. The island contains tropical forests and other habitats that support considerable biodiversity.
Endemism
A species is endemic when its natural geographical distribution is restricted to a particular area. At the time of its scientific recognition, Lycodon irwini was known from Great Nicobar Island. This does not mean that every member of the genus Lycodon is endemic to Great Nicobar.
Conservation Importance
New species discoveries help improve biodiversity inventories and environmental assessments. Habitat loss, fragmentation, road development and changes in land use can be important concerns for island wildlife. The discovery of a species should not be confused with a formal IUCN threat-category assessment.
