Motor Neuron Disease |

Why in News? |

Motor neuron disease came into focus after researchers reported experimental approaches aimed at reducing accumulation of toxic proteins inside nerve cells, an important area of research in neurodegenerative disease.

What is Motor Neuron Disease? | Motor Neuron Disease

Motor neuron disease, or MND, is a group of progressive neurodegenerative disorders that damage motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is the most common form of MND.

Motor Neurons |

Motor neurons carry signals from the brain and spinal cord to skeletal muscles. They are essential for voluntary movements and contribute to functions such as speaking, swallowing and breathing.

What Happens in MND? | MND

As motor neurons progressively stop functioning and die, signals can no longer reach muscles effectively. Muscles become weak, waste away and may eventually become paralysed.

Causes | कारण

The exact cause is unknown in many patients. Both genetic and non-genetic factors are involved. A minority of cases are familial and linked to inherited gene variants.

Symptoms |

  • Progressive weakness in hands, arms, legs or feet /
  • Muscle cramps and twitching / muscle cramps और twitching
  • Difficulty speaking or swallowing /
  • Breathing problems in advanced disease / advanced disease में breathing problems

Age | आयु

MND can occur in adults of different ages but becomes more common in later adulthood.

Is There a Cure? |

There is currently no cure that reverses MND. Treatment aims to slow disease progression in selected forms, manage symptoms, preserve function and improve quality of life.

Treatment का उद्देश्य disease progression को धीमा करना, symptoms manage करना, functions बनाए रखना और quality of life improve करना है।

Important Dates |

  • 1869: French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot described the clinical-pathological features of ALS.
  • 1939: ALS became widely known as Lou Gehrig's disease in the United States after baseball player Lou Gehrig was diagnosed.
