Neanderthals |

Why in News? |

Genetic research continues to refine scientific understanding of interactions between Neanderthals and modern humans, including the extent to which Neanderthal populations contributed DNA to Homo sapiens.

Who Were Neanderthals? | Neanderthals

Neanderthals, scientifically known as Homo neanderthalensis, were an extinct human lineage that lived mainly in Europe and parts of western and central Asia. They were not a population spread across Africa.

Time Period | काल

Neanderthals lived roughly from about 400,000 years ago until approximately 40,000 years ago, although estimates vary with fossils and genetic evidence.

Physical Adaptations |

They generally had shorter, stockier bodies than modern humans, features suited to cold environments. Their skulls often had large brow ridges, a projecting mid-face and a large nasal region.

Brains and Behaviour |

Neanderthal brain size was broadly comparable with and sometimes larger than that of modern humans. Archaeological evidence shows that they made sophisticated stone tools, controlled fire, hunted animals and used shelters.

Interbreeding with Homo sapiens | Homo sapiens

Genomic studies demonstrate that Neanderthals and modern humans interbred. Many present-day populations outside Africa retain a small percentage of Neanderthal-derived DNA.

Name and Discovery |

The name Neanderthal comes from Germany's Neander Valley. Fossils discovered there in 1856 became the first remains scientifically recognised as representing a distinct ancient human form, although earlier Neanderthal fossils had been found elsewhere.

Important Dates |

  • 1829: Early Neanderthal fossil material was discovered at Engis, Belgium.
  • 1856: Famous fossils were discovered in Neander Valley, Germany.
  • 1997: First analysis of Neanderthal mitochondrial DNA was published.
  • 6 May 2010: Draft Neanderthal genome research demonstrated genetic contribution to living humans.
  • About 40,000 years ago: Last known Neanderthal populations disappeared.
