English: Percentage is always relative to a base

A percentage expresses a quantity out of 100. The calculation is simple; choosing the correct base is the real skill. If 18 of 60 candidates pass, the pass percentage is (18/60) × 100 = 30%. Here 60 is the base because the question asks for a share of all candidates. If a value changes from 80 to 100, the increase is 20, or (20/80) × 100 = 25%. The original value, 80, is the base for a percentage change. Railway and SSC questions often hide the base inside words such as 'of', 'than', 'remaining', or 'original'. Underline those words before calculating.

Three basic forms

To find p% of A, calculate A × p/100. Thus 15% of 240 is 36. To find what percentage B is of A, calculate (B/A) × 100. Thus 36 is 15% of 240. To recover a whole when a percentage is known, divide the known part by p/100. If 36 is 15% of a number, the number is 36/0.15 = 240. These are the same relationship rearranged; a different formula need not be memorised for each wording.

Increase, decrease and the new base

After a 20% increase, multiply the original by 1.20. After a 20% decrease, multiply it by 0.80. A salary of ₹25,000 increased by 20% becomes ₹30,000. To return from ₹30,000 to ₹25,000, the required decrease is ₹5,000/₹30,000 × 100 = 16⅔%, not 20%. The base has changed. Likewise, if a price falls from ₹500 to ₹400, the decrease is 20% of ₹500; returning to ₹500 requires an increase of 25% of ₹400. Equal numerical changes in rupees need not be equal percentage changes in opposite directions.

Successive changes

Apply changes in sequence to the current amount. Starting with 100, an increase of 20% gives 120; a subsequent decrease of 20% gives 96. The final result is 4% below the starting value. For signed percentage changes a and b, the net percentage change is a + b + ab/100, where a decrease is entered as a negative number. Here a = 20 and b = −20, so the net is 20 − 20 − 4 = −4%. This shortcut follows from multiplying (1 + a/100)(1 + b/100). It is safe only when each stated change is applied to the value immediately before it.

For two discounts of 25% and 20%, a ₹1,000 marked price first becomes ₹750, then ₹600. The combined discount is ₹400/₹1,000 = 40%, not 45%. For a population rising by 10% in each of two years, the multiplier is 1.1 × 1.1 = 1.21, or a 21% overall rise. The order of two pure percentage multipliers does not alter the final number, but a question may contain an intervening fixed addition, fee or change of base that makes a shortcut inappropriate.

Reverse percentage questions

When the final amount and the change are given, undo the multiplier. If a number after a 25% increase is 500, its original value is 500/1.25 = 400. If the value after a 20% decrease is 640, the original is 640/0.80 = 800. Do not subtract 25% of the final 500 to recover the first number; the 25% increase was measured on the unknown original, not on 500. A good check is to apply the stated change to your answer: 400 × 1.25 = 500.

Percentage points and comparison traps

If a pass rate rises from 40% to 50%, it rises by 10 percentage points. Relative to the old rate, the increase is (50 − 40)/40 × 100 = 25%. The two descriptions answer different questions. Another trap appears in 'A is 25% more than B'. If B = 100, A = 125, so B is (25/125) × 100 = 20% less than A. The reverse comparison uses A as the new base. Write a convenient base of 100 when no actual number is given.

Practice with answers

1. A ₹800 item is discounted by 10% and then by 15%. Price = 800 × 0.90 × 0.85 = ₹612; total discount = 23.5%. 2. An examination has 360 successful candidates, representing 72% of those who appeared. Total appeared = 360/0.72 = 500. 3. A town's population is 24,200 after two consecutive 10% increases. Original population = 24,200/1.21 = 20,000. 4. An amount rises from 250 to 300. Rise = 50/250 × 100 = 20%; returning from 300 to 250 requires 50/300 × 100 = 16⅔% decrease. Each result can be checked by forward multiplication.

A का p% निकालने के लिए A × p/100 करें।
