Waves /
A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transporting matter from one place to another.
Types of Waves /
The source broadly divides waves into Mechanical Waves and Electromagnetic Waves.
Mechanical Waves /
Mechanical waves are discussed in two forms in the source: longitudinal waves and transverse waves.
Longitudinal Waves /
In longitudinal waves, particles of the medium vibrate in the direction of propagation of the wave.
- Waves on springs / Spring
- Sound waves in air /
Transverse Waves /
In transverse waves, particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of propagation.
- Waves on a stretched string /
- Waves on the surface of water /
Electromagnetic Waves /
Electromagnetic waves do not require a material medium and can propagate through vacuum. The source gives light, radio waves and X-rays as examples.
Sound Waves /
The source describes sound waves as longitudinal mechanical waves.
Source Sound Waves को Longitudinal Mechanical Waves बताता है।
Audible Sound /
Frequency range: 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
Infrasonic Waves /
Sound waves with frequencies below 20 Hz are infrasonic waves.
Ultrasonic Waves /
Sound waves having frequency above 20,000 Hz are ultrasonic waves.
Uses of Ultrasonic Waves /
- Sending signals / Signals
- Measuring depth of sea /
- Cleaning machinery parts in difficult-to-reach locations / कठिन स्थानों पर स्थित machinery parts की cleaning
Speed of Sound /
- Speed of sound is maximum in solids and minimum in gases.
- When sound changes medium, its speed and wavelength change but frequency remains unchanged.
- The source states that speed increases with temperature.
- Sound travels faster in humid air than dry air according to the source.
Echo /
The repetition of sound due to reflection of sound waves is called an echo.
Intensity /
Intensity is the amount of energy passing per unit time through unit area perpendicular to the direction of sound propagation.
Pitch /
The sensation associated with frequency is called pitch.
SONAR
SONAR stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging.
SONAR का full form Sound Navigation and Ranging है।
Uses of SONAR /
- Measuring sea depth /
- Locating enemy submarines / Enemy submarines
- Locating shipwrecks /
Doppler Effect /
When there is relative motion between a sound source and an observer, the apparent frequency heard by the observer differs from the actual frequency emitted by the source. This is called the Doppler Effect.
- Distance decreases → Apparent frequency increases.
- Distance increases → Apparent frequency decreases.
