Why in News?
Hungarian-British writer David Szalay won the Booker Prize 2025 for his novel Flesh. He became the first Hungarian-British author to win the prestigious literary award.
What is the Booker Prize?
The Booker Prize is one of the world's leading literary awards for a single work of fiction. It honours what the judging panel considers the best sustained work of fiction written in English and published in the United Kingdom and/or Ireland during the relevant eligibility period.
Origin
The prize was established in the United Kingdom in 1969. Initially, eligibility was closely associated with writers from the Commonwealth, Ireland and some other territories, but the rules were later broadened.
Eligibility
The prize is now open to writers of any nationality, provided the eligible work is originally written in English and published by an eligible publisher in the United Kingdom and/or Ireland. A translated novel is not eligible for the Booker Prize itself; translated fiction is recognised separately through the International Booker Prize.
Prize Money
The Booker Prize winner receives £50,000. Each of the other shortlisted authors receives £2,500.

The Booker Prize recognises a work originally written in English. The International Booker Prize focuses on fiction translated into English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland, with the award shared between the author and translator.
