What is Baliyatra?
Baliyatra is a major cultural festival celebrated in Cuttack, Odisha. The expression 'Bali Jatra' broadly means 'Voyage to Bali'. It commemorates the maritime journeys undertaken by merchants and sailors of ancient Kalinga to Bali and other parts of South and Southeast Asia.
The festival is observed around Kartika Purnima, traditionally associated with the departure of Kalinga's maritime traders for overseas voyages.
Ancient Kalinga's Maritime Heritage
Ancient Kalinga developed extensive maritime and cultural contacts with regions that are today associated with Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Traditional Odia merchants and seafarers involved in these voyages are commonly remembered as Sadhabas.
Maritime routes helped facilitate trade as well as the exchange of ideas, religion, language, art and cultural practices between India's eastern coast and Southeast Asia.
Boita Bandana
Boita Bandana is an important ritual associated with Kartika Purnima in Odisha. People float miniature boats made from materials such as paper, banana stem or other traditional materials in rivers and water bodies. The ritual symbolically remembers the voyages of Odisha's ancient seafarers.
Cuttack Baliyatra
The modern Baliyatra in Cuttack is associated particularly with the banks of the Mahanadi. It has developed into a large fair featuring handicrafts, food, cultural programmes, entertainment and commercial exhibitions.

कटक और महानदी
